Question:
Hi there, I have never posted before but am wondering what advice you can offer..

I am 4 weeks post-op from lap RNY and am having a difficult time getting my water and protein in. I take my vitamins in the morning and that seems to fill me up to where I can't eat any breakfast. I take a 2 L bottle to work every day and drink it all over a 10 hr day. Lunch is usually oatmeal or something similiar (usually 5 bites). Between all the water I'm supposed to drink, it seems like I have no room for food. This concerns me, I know I'm not getting enough protein or calories to even maintain life! How do you stay hydrated AND get 60 grams or more or protein?    — Amy S. (posted on November 13, 2001)

Welcome! Its my opinion that few get all the water and protein in at the begining, I KNOW I didnt. Some days I still dont. After a couple months it gets a lot easier though and those bad days are rare. Try to get in as much water as possible, then what protein you can. Then do what I did..... Do the best you can and dont worry!

I am 3 just about 3 months post op and still cannot get near my 60 grms of protein. I just try my best. I also take my vitamins and drink as much water as I can usually 32 oz and then some extra throughout the day. I justed wanted to tell you that maybe for lunch in stead of the oatmeal try adding some tunafish with a little bit of mayo to moisten it, sometimes I drink skim milk as a snack to get the protein and calcium I need. I also have a peice of cheese here and there as a snack. I know at 4 wks I could barely eat anything...now at almost 3 months I definitly have a slightly increased appetite. So it does get easier....Good Luck and feel good...Melissa :)

JUST WANT TO PUT IN MY 2CENTS WORTH. My surgeon said as long as you take your vitamins, drink your protein and water you don't even need the food. Your mind only thinks it needs the food. I try to drink protein 2x aday and one small protein meal and I'm good to go. Kathy

I lived off cottage cheese, string cheese and sugar-free, fat-free yogurt for two months. To flavor up the cottage cheese I either added salsa or sugar free strawberry jam. My surgeon said to have oatmeal only occasionally. If you don't get in enough protein your body may think it is starving and you might slow your weight loss down. It happened to me in the beginning. I also added protein shakes to my diet--even though my surgeon doesn't want us to use them. I have lost 58 lbs. in 13 weeks.
