Question:
How long before you were able to drive?

Please could someone give me an idea of how long it was before you could drive. Also, when approx did you feel able to get around and almost back to normal? Thank you.    — Tinadelve (posted on November 28, 2004)

I had my surgery lap. My dr. allowed me to drive starting on the 8th day. I did great.

I had an Open RNY (due to a previous surgery for GERD, my surgeon felt it best to do it open), and I was able to drive at 10 days post-op but just short distances, and if I was not taking any pain meds. I think it was at about 2 weeks post-op that I really began to feel like I could get around easier and without discomfort. The one thing that kept surprising me was how quickly I would get tired, that seemed to last about 4 weeks. Again, this is post-op for a open procedure. The best to you!

Hi. I was very lucky, I had pretty much a perfect surgery and recovery. I was allowed to drive exactly a week after being released from the hospital. I was basically comfy right after I got home... some things I couldn't do for hours, but on the whole I was good to go. good luck, Amber

I drove after 3 weeks, but that was because my husband was around to drive me. I think I could have done it after 2 weeks. My sister and I work together and she drove me in my first week back, so I guess itn was actually almost 4 weeks. I just got lucky. I seem to remember my Dr. saying that he wanted us to wait until we were pretty healed, just in case we had to jam on the brakes or something of that sort. Good luck!
