Question:
Does anyone still get food

I am 13 months postop. Sometimes I still get food stuck and have to throw it up. If I don't, nothing else goes down, including saliva - it starts backing up. I usually get food stuck if I don't chew it well, eat something hard like rice, or overeat. Does anyone else have that problem this far out? I don't hear anyone asking this question.    — raye (posted on February 27, 2004)

yes, i do. I have to throw up nearly everyday especially if I try to eat meat. I get food stuck all the time. probably the reason you don't hear a lot on it at this late out is because we have gotten used to it happening and just take it in stride. at least I do.

I'm 5 months out today and I've only gotten food stuck twice and that was in the first month! I couldn't throw it up and it hurt so much, I haven't made that mistake again. I just be REALLY careful what I eat and I chew, chew, chew and it seems to be working for me. So far I haven't overeaten either since my tummy starts some major growling when I've had just enough. First growl I hear, I stop eating! Hope I keep that little signal as I get further out.

Yes. I'm over 2 1/2 years out, and occasionally won't chew something well enough (chicken legs and hard boiled eggs it happens with the most), and will end up throwing up. I just need to be extra careful to chew these foods. Most of the time, everything goes through just fine, even when I'm not chewing carefully.

I don't, but my nutritionist said papaya enzyme helps with stuck food.

Yep. I'm 10 1/2 months out and things still get stuck occasionally. Just this week my routine morning meds got stuck and I threw them all back up. I can usually determine the reason why something gets stuck and/or I throw up. It's almost alls because I ate too fast, didn't chew throughly enough, or was stressed and my esophagus became constricted. Happily, the further out I get the less frequently these things happen.

I'm one year out and I still have this problem once in a while. I think it's from two things. First if I don't chew well enough or if I eat to fast. and it is weird cause when I finally do throw up, it's all saliva and mucus, hardly any food at all.....I know how you feel! Hang in there!

That happens to me when I don't chew good enough or if I eat past my point of being full. I will feel like I have to throw up for a while and that entire time I will hack (for lack of a better word) up saliva, it's like I am producing to much or something or maybe it has nowhere to go. Sometimes I throw up if I don't "hack" if I don't and that goes on for over an hour or two (knowing my food should have gone down by then) I try and make myself throw up becuase the pressure is slightly painful. I am not sure why that happens but it does. Sorry for my wording.

Happens to me quite a lot - at least a few times/week, especially if I get distracted while eating, and I am nearly two years post-op, and very disciplined about my post-op diet. I am very careful about how I chew and what I eat now. Very little botes, and more soft food work the best for me.
