Question:
Okay guys, don't laugh at me......

I've heard many of you mentioned bringing tongs to the hospital. I've searched the site trying to see if I could find my answer but haven't been able to. What are tongs and what are they used for?    — meltedbuttr (posted on October 25, 2002)

Some people use tongs to help wipe their fanny. I have also heard of folks using, wooden spoons or back scratchers, as it is hard to reach back there, without causing stress on the incision. LOL, its literaly a pain in the a**. Toodles, and best wishes

I planned on tongs, but ended up with a big wooden spoon. Everyone laughed at me when I told tham what it would be for, but I have to tell ya, I used it!! A lot of use females start our periods while in the hospital and it came in handy for that too. I would wrap Cottonelle pre-moistened wipes around them. It all sounds crazy, bending and twisting was too much to bare.....Karen (lap RNY 9/20/02- down 50lbs.)

Tongs are a type of kitchen utensil. They're like little grabbers, used a lot in BBQ. Geez, it's hard to describe them. I hope you know what I'm talking about. And make sure you take the flushable moist wipes. If what I went through is normal, you have the runnies a lot the first several days. Good luck.

I didn't use the tongs for what the other ladies are talking about, but I did use them. I found them to be extremely helpful for picking up things that were dropped on the floor.

Well Josii, don't laugh at me but I thought a "tong" was a large, long wooden fork that "some" use to wipe their butt. I was trying to picture how you would keep it from being sharp and hurting yourself when wipeing. Hmmm. You learn something new everyday around here. lol

As a guy I was afraid if you were'nt careful with a "tong" you'd make yourself a female right fast. lol.

I went for the wooden spoon also. There is no way, when you have an OPEN (not sure about LAP) with 37 staples you can bend in any direction to wipe yourself.....wrap the TP or wipes around the spoon and you don't have to ask for help LOL.

well I tried the tongs, tried the spoon and finally just stretched, bent, twisted and reached! With the tongs, I kept losing the paper and same with the spoon. Guess I'm not talented haha. But anyway, if you can't reach I wish you a LOT of luck with the tongs :>)

Ok, don't shoot me...But if you can just get a grip and lose the modesty, ask the darn nurse to wipe you...IT IS THERE JOB! Or, have your wife, husband, mom, dad do it. That is what family is there for, don't injure yourself and also you will look really silly.

You didn't say where you were having surgery and I checked your profile and didn't see it....but I know that BTC provides you with long tongs, as well as a sponge on a long stick.

I used a hard plastic spoon with tissue wrapped around it. Later that day I went to the potty and found that someone had thrown it away!!!!! I couldn't believe it...But I ended up streching and getting the job done..I didnt have to ask anyone for help. I'll be 2 weeks out tomorrow and have had no prob...but the first days, it is very handy.
