Question:
Is there anything I can do to avoid strictures/ stenosis?

I've been reading that so many WLS patients have strictures/ stenosis. Is there anything I can do before the surgery or after the surgery to reduce my chances of having a stricture? Thanks Mariee in Oakland    — Mariee H. (posted on August 14, 2002)

Take an 81mg aspirin (children's or Ecotrin) per day, but make sure to stop three days before your procedure. Start your walking ahead of time and get your circulation going. Cut back on all fat intake. The best time to start a non-fat diet is right now.

There is absolutely no way to avoid developing a stricture. Do not take baby aspirin. Our pouches cannot tolerate aspirin products. Please talk with your doctor before you take anyones advice here on this board. Strictures are just simply an overhealing of scar tissue and its just your individual healing that determines if you will get a stricture. But be aware that only 4-6% of WLS patients have strictures. It may seem as if a lot do, because out of the tens of thousand members on the board, you get all of the strictures speaking up, not the ones that don't. My surgeons statistics on strictures are closer to 2%, and I am one of the lucky ones, I had 2. Its not something worth stressing about. Really.

My surgeon told me that with the Open VGB (stapling with gastric banding) stomal stenosis is VERY common, in fact this is the primary reason that there is only 1 surgeon in Pa that still does the VGB. I have one (which explains ALOT, like why I get nauseated so easy and why I have been throwing up ALOT) and I am 8 yrs post-op.
