Question:
How long after surgery does the anesthesia affect you?

When I return home from my surgery I will need to climb a short flight of stairs to get to my room. It's about 7 steps. Will I be so "out of it" that I will need help to get up there? Also, how long after surgery did it take before you felt like getting out into the world again? I know everyone is different, but I just wanted to see what people think! Thanks! :o)    — fropunka (posted on June 28, 2002)

Hello. The anesthesia can affect you in different ways. For me it did not affect me at all in the dizziness, lightheaded way. My beadroom is comleteyly upstairs and I was alright to walk upstairs. but the other way for the way to affect is constipation the doctors said, and I'm not sure how long that can last, maybe a week or so? It took about a week or a little longer before I felt like going back into the world. I was in quite a bit of pain and cranky and just didn't want to talk to or see anyone! LOL but after that I was so sick of being inside, i needed some fresh air! Goodluck to you on your surgery!! :)

Rosie, your right everyone is different. The anesthesia wears off within a day or so, and by the time I got home after 2 days, was able to negotiate the stairs, SLOWLY. As for getting out in the world, I was walking gingerly outside on day 4 (nice cool weather in February!), but it took a good 6 weeks before I felt 1/2 way normal with any normal energy levels.

hey honey.my experiance was when you leave the hospital you won't be out of it. you will feel fine but you will be sore. the steps you can handle- but god knows don't sneeze or cough! that is what really hurts- oh - and laughing is a no no too! since i am a basically goofy person i had to brace my stomache to laugh or cough which will make you wonder why you got the surgery to begin with.- but the anestesia part was weird to me. i broke out from my i.v. site and the more i scratched the more it spreaded like wildfire. first i itched for a couple days then i noticed the bumpy masses on my arms and the more i scratched it got all over my chest neck then my face! not the face- oh but no!!! i went to walmart 2 in the morning for benadryl to no avail. they didn'y have any. so i resorted to skin picking hot showers and this cooled me down from itching and the rash aftershock went away. lasted about a week or two then i was good to go. hope this input helps ya. preop-4-11-02 @ 370 pounds- postop today 293.5 and going- god bless & good luck!
