Question:
Will they still perform the surgery if you have Acid Reflux?

Ok, in general will surgeons perform the surgery if you have Acid Reflux? If any of you are having surgery through PB in San diego, do you know if they still do the surgery if you have AR?    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on May 31, 2002)

I had acid reflux so bad that every night I would wake up gagging on stomach contents, gasping for air, then wheeze the rest of the night. It was horrible. I am almost 7 months post-op and no more acid reflux!! You may have heard it referred to as GERD or Gastro Esophogeal Reflux Disease. It is a co-morbidity! And now sleep is sweet...every night!

I totally agree with Cheri, this surgery fixed my acid reflux. I would have done the surgery to fix the awfull acid reflux, never mind the 100 pounds I have lost in the last seven months!

GERD is one of the reasons they will do surgery. It is a common comorbidity among the MO. My GERD has been gone since I was about 3 months post-op.

I had not been diagnosed with GERD before having surgery, but I did have major daily heartburn. I had to take Prevacid daily to keep the heartburn at bay. One great thing about this surgery: the morning of surgery, I took a Prevacid, and that's the last one I took! Haven't had a lick of heartburn since!

Like some others have said, I WOULD HAVE THIS SURGERY JUST TO GET RID OF GERD... the weight loss is a big bonus! I slept almost sitting up ON THE SOFA for over a year. From the day of surgery NO REFLUX!! YEA! I am two weeks post-op and I ordered a new Select Comfort mattress today because NOW (post op) sleeping is a luxuary and a blessing for me!! NO MORE STOMACH CONTENTS AND ACID GAGGING ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

The reason for my acid reflux was a hiatal hernia. My surgeon repaired that while doing my RNY. Make sure you aren't diagnosed with that. But regardless, the reflux will go away. I haven't had it since, and I am one week post op.
