According to my doctor, there are two "major" complications which are the leading cause of death from this surgery.... pulmonary embolism (a blood clot which travels to the lungs)and leaking at the contection of the new pouch and the intestine. My understanding is that these occur in approximately 1-3% of cases, but of course are not always fatal. HTH
