Question:
Anyone else eat alot of popcorn?

I am just over 6 months post op. For the past month I have been eating a mini-bag of popcorn 4-5 nights per week. Since then, I have lost 13 lbs. I think the fiber in the popcorn is causing the faster weightloss. The mini-bag has about 150 calories in it and I have no problem eating the whole bag...in fact I can eat about 3/4th of a normal bag of popcorn. Does that seem odd? Has anyone else noticed weight loss from popcorn? Is there anything wrong with eating this much popcorn?    — partygirl1 (posted on January 23, 2004)

I am 13 months post op and I can put away a lot of popcorn. My favorite is smart food white cheddar. I too notice a difference in my weight loss when eating popcorn. I think we can eat more because popcorn is mostly air. I'm sure if I were to ask my doctor he would say "You shouldn't be eating popcorn, it's a bad snack choice" Me personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with it now and then. 345/190 12/23/2002

our bodies are very strange things . . . . a few weeks ago I went on a mini binge . . . yeah I know, bad girl, I bought a box of biscotti, telling myself, OK, you can have one now and then. Well, true to form, I finished the whole box before the day was out . . . got on the scale the next morning figuring I'd sure as shootin' gain . . . surprise, I dropped 2 pounds. Go figure. So popcorn? Who knows!

I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who can eat popcorn like it's going out of style. LOL. I love the Orville Redenbacher mini-bags. I get the butter flavored smart pop kind and I can easily eat the whole bag. I eat popcorn at least three times per week, sometimes more. In the smart pop, there are only 15 calories in a cup of popped corn and it indicates on the bag that it yields 6 cups. It sure doesn't seem like 6 cups to me, but I've never measured. Anyhow, that means that eating the entire bag is only 90 calories. I think that as long as you're not severely limiting your carbs, and as long as eating the whole bag of popcorn often doesn't trigger any binge-type behaviors, then it's just fine. I don't know what it is about the fluffy stuff, but I crave it all the time. Popcorn and wheat thins are about the only things that I ever crave. And if giving into that craving means that I won't crave sweets, I'll take it! ~Kristy (lap rny 9/18/03 - 320/250/168)

ooohhhh...you guys are soooo brave - lol Popcorn was on my surgeons "never again" list along with soda, NSAIDS, freshly baked bread, fresh coconut and gum chewing (in case you accidentally swallow it). I am way too scared to even try these things....lol. But then, I was never a huge fan of popcorn or bread so I don't miss them. The soda and gum however were so hard to give up....It's been nearly 3 years without touching any of it.

I love popcorn! I was worried before WLS that I would not be able to eat it anymore. I can not only eat it but I can eat quite a bit of it. Hot, buttery, and salty works for me!! Laura/270/174/goal 155lbs.

I eat popcorn 3-4 times per week. I can eat 3/4 of a large back at a time. Once in awhile I can eat the whole bag! I'm 8 months post op and have been eating popcorn since 3 months post op without any problems. So far, I have lost 128 pounds with another 55 to go.

I can't eat a lot of anything. When I go to the movies I share a child size popcorn with my grandson. It has about 4 cups and it works out perfect size for me and a 5 year old.

I also can eat quite a bit of popcorn at one time. I am 6 months postop and have been eating it since about 2 months postop. It goes down easily and I have never had a problem with it. I must be doing something right cause I am down 110 lbs. in 6 months, with a goal of 45 more to lose.

I, too, am a popcorn-fiend. I crave salt and popcorn is my favorite snack. The fiber is good, and it is relatively low in fat, BUT most microwave popcorn has trans fats. Not a good thing. I eat Paul Newman's "Pop's Corn". It is organic and does not have any trans fats. I eat the regular butter flavor and it is the best. I am a year post-op and can eat a whole bag of popcorn in 2 sittings.

Kaiser says this is a no-no forever. They have had numerous people readmitted to the hospital with blocked up pouches since popcorn is very tough and does not break down. Same with coconut and untoasted bread. Personally, I really would not want them doing more procedures on me if I could prevent it. Dulci

Hi! I will be two years post-op on Feb. 22nd, and I have been eating popcorn since one month post-op with no problems! The mini-bags are wonderful, and I found that a little of the carbs helped my weight loss too! Enjoy!!!

I've eaten popcorn on and off since about 2 months postop with no ill effects. I tend to eat it slowly and not put too much in my mouth at one time and it works for me.

I am a year postop and I can also eat about 3/4 of a normal size bag of popcorn, but its the smart pop kind that's 94% fat free. The kettle corn is pretty good. It has not hindered my weight loss at all, in fact I had some popcorn last night and I actually lost another pound. I dont think its a big deal to have some popcorn once in a while, as long as youre not doing it everyday.
