Question:
Has anyone had diarrhea constantly since Open R-N-Y?

I am 26 months post-op. I was 357, and am now 157 (ish). Have had constant diarrhea since surgery, and was even hospitalized in August for a week. Ended up having cardiac catherization and found out that my heart, etc. was okay, but they think a lot of my problems are related to a constant potassium deficiency. Am wondering if I should have the surgery revised. Anyone have any thoughts on this? ~Angie ( [email protected] ) 01/19/04    — Angie G. S. (posted on January 19, 2004)

Hello! First congrats on your awsome weight loss!! I just have a question about fat intake, I am 2 years po-op ( in 2 days! ) and I know when I eat too much fat/grease type foods I suffer with diarrhea. Have you tried to go back to the basics & reintroduce foods one at a time to see if it happens to be a certain food/food group that triggers it? Hope this helps & Good Luck!!! Hi Angie, I had this same question posed to my doctor. I found that it was my diet. Diarrhea is a dumping symptom. I don't sweat or lie down, I have hershey quirts. I found that Green tea, peanuts, rasins, and peanut butter were the culprits. I also found that my chewable vitamin C had a sugar in it that made me have diarrhea too. Hope hope this helps you... I've only ad diarrhea once and it was definitely peanut butter. I tried it again just to be sure and the same thing happened. I can eat the natural peanut butter without problems but not Jif or any of the others. Has your doctor given you potassium supplements? I found I was having problems with potassium deficiencies when I was sticking solely to proteins so I started taking a supplement and adding some potassium rich foods to my daily diet. I'm not sure what you mean by revised.........do you mean have it reversed?

Angie, I see from your profile that you were distally bypassed. Do you know how much of the intestine was bypassed? It is my understanding that the more intestine bypassed the greater the risk of having problems with chronic diarrhea.

Could it be lactose intolerance? Or too much sugar? These are the two issues that have caused me diarrhea since my surgery a year ago. Good luck. 252/122
