Question:
What types of food should I pack for a 18hr road trip

In a week and half I will be leaving for a road trip to Bradenton Fl. a 18hr trip with one night stay over. I am a 4week post-op. I need ideas for restraunts and would like to pack some food to with me. I will be staying with friends for two weeks. My mother is also going with me. This trip will be ladies only, first trip in 25yrs without my husband. Well wish me luck. Thank you    — mary jane S. (posted on October 28, 2003)

ASK YOUR SURGEON FIRST! Your still in the risk zoe for bloodclots. At minimum stop every hour and walk around for 10 minutes. I know this makes your trip longer but its a matter of safety. Drink plenty of fluids constantly sand most of all HAVE A GREAT TIME!

I'm glad you asked this question! I'm planning a trip to Fla next weekend (8 hours for me). The tip to stop and walk around is a good one. I don't know that I would have thought of it. I also will plan to take plenty of cash to stop and buy bottled water, some string cheese, a couple of Lotta Blast protein drinks from Designer Whey, maybe some sugar free jello in the little packs and maybe even some nuts. Can't think of anything else right now.

If you're going to have a cooler, I'd go for protein drinks, yogurt, cheese, peanut butter, water...etc.

I agree with getting out of your car and walking. Also wear support socks. I travel quite a bit both by plane and by car. I am 7 mos post op. I eat very little compared to those around me. In the deli section Oscar Meyer has snack size deli meats and cheeses. I put them in a small bag I can keep with me and I throw a small ice pack in the bag. I also bring a couple of high protein bars in case I end up someplace where I can't eat what they have available. Don't eat to many protein bars though. They may be high in protein, low in carbs, but they are often packed with calories as well. String cheese is a favorite. A few pieces of fruit are good, the kind you have to peel (oranges, grapefruit) because they stay fresher longer. Hope this helps, have a good trip.

I recently went on a 34 hour road trip from California to Mississippi. I brought a cooler along and here's what I packed: carrots, cottage cheese, cheese slices, lunch meat, cheese sticks, water, diet Snapple and Fruit 2o. I just made sure that about every hour I either ate some protein or drank something. I also had some beef jerky and protein bars and some goldfish crackers. I needed some "snack" type foods to help me resist all the junk food at the gas stations we would pass on the way. Good luck with your trip.

For once I agree with Bob, make sure you check with your doc first. Mine told me no long trips for the first 6 to 8 weeks because of the chance for blood clots. I live 2 hours away from my doc, he told me to stop every 1 to walk as well when I came for office visits. Please note I didn't have any history of blood clots either, he said no one is immune to them. Please check before you go or have a plan.
