I started out at 5'6" and 297 lbs. After surgery I no longer take Provers e/o month for a cycle because it seems to be regulating itself. At 3.5 mths I've lost 72 lbs. Not sure if I'm considered a slow loser because I also have hypothyroism, but I figure at whatever rate I loose it's better then what I was before WLS. RNY 5/28/03, -72 lbs.

I started out at 291 at 5'5" tall. I am 4 months post op tomorrow and have lost 84 lbs to date. I have PCOS but it has never caused me much trouble. I've always had regular periods, been able to get pregnant, and don't have a lot of facial hair, although my OB/GYN said I had terrible PCOS and I take glucaphage to help control the increased insulin levels. It has not hindered by weight loss at all.

I have a 25+ year history of PCOS including severe secondary ammenorhea (no periods). I have been on Depo Provera shots, every 6 or 8 weeks, since 1995. This helps keep my body from developing ovarian and uterine cancer and also helps some with cervical cancer. Because of the severe secondary ammenorhea I was at great risk for these types of cancer plus eventually hemorrhaging.
I am almost 7-1/2 months PO and was down 162 lbs by 7 months, so neither the PCOS or Depo Provera have affected anything but in a positive way. Other than taking spironolactone in the past for the hirsutism (facial hair growth), I have never taken anything for the PCOS but BCP's which sent my body into continuous bleeding for over 9 months. The Depo was the next choice and for me it really was a miracle treatment. My body is so happy with the increased dosage of progesterone. I am 5'9, 42 yrs old and started at 442 lbs. I have 80 lbs to get to goal.
Please do not let the fear of having PCOS affect your decision to have WLS in any way. As you can see from all of the posts so far, many people are doing great. If anything the WLS is going to help put your hormones etc. into balance.

I think we will always have a struggle. But that everyone is different. I think you need to speak to PCOSers who have actually achieved goal, rather than those who haven't- to answer this question completely. I've had PCOS symtpoms since 1984, I was not diagnosed until 1999. I started at 275, got to 187 and bottomed out. Creeped back to 195 and stayed there. I want to get to 150 but find it very very hard to lose anything more, just like dieting before WLS! So- you've asked a very hard question to answer! Is it PCOS- I still have symptoms... and WLS does not cure it. Or is it ME? PCOS is notorious for lethargy. Still you question what is lack of motivation and what is lack of energy. You always feel guilty, period. Going to start back on the Met to see if it helps... If I ever get to 150, I can say- "yes, I am a slow loser" but as what to blame it on is very hard to pin down.....

Yes, I beleive some of us with PCOS will lose more slowly... I am fairly new post-op (7 weeks), but was losing very slowly! My doc put me on glucophage and spironolactone, and I am losing like crazy!!! I am down 40lbs in 7 weeks, which for a relative "lightweight" is pretty good I think! I feel great anyway....

Seven weeks out, down a little over 37 pounds. Would have lost more if I had time to exercise more.

I have pcos. I am 29 years old, I have lost 204lbs and my surgery was 3/18/02. I believe that if you limit your carb intake that you will lose your weight at a normal rate. I was on bc pills for 7 months after my surgery. I did not have a menstral cycle 2 years prior to surgery. Once i stopped taking the bc pills I have had a normal cycle since. I am almost at goal and my doctor put me on spironolactone to speed up the weight loss and for excess facial hair. just limit the carbs and you will do wonderful

PCOS, in my opinion, has absolutely NOTHING do to with how fast or slow you lose weight after wls!! I lost 212 lbs in 16 months... it just depends on how well you control yourself and stick to the diet and exercise regime! :~) At 18 months post-op, I actually became pregnant, too! :~) I am 14 weeks pregnant with my first child, and I was told (because of the PCO and having ovarian cyst surgeries) that I would NEVER have children... read my profile for my story, if you like! :~) I started at 378 lbs, Lap RNY, and am now at 180 and 14 weeks pregnant! I was less than 20 from goal when I got pregnant, too! LOL! Good luck and just get and stay in control after wls and you shouldn't have any problems losing weight! Hugs!
