Question:
Does everyone need to have a drain tube after surgery?

I'm not sure if you're referring to the drain tube or the Nasogastric tube. My surgeon did not leave in a NG tube but you will probably have what is called a JP drain for a week or so, even if your surgery is done lap.

I had Open RNY. They had already removed my NG Tube before I woke up. I never had a drain tube either. Why? I have no idea, but I didn't.

My surgeon said I will have no tubes when I wake up. The only thing attached to me other than the IV will be a catheter and that can come out the next morning. All doctors have different procedures.

I had open RNY, only an NG tube, catheter and IV. No tubes from incision or from stomach through the skin. Also my leak test was done during surgery...so no nasty drink. Like with everything else....all surgeons have their own way.

My doctor said she does not put a drain in unless you have complications. She only performs open RNY. She said she has a few people that need them, but it is not routine to put a drain in. I kind of have mixed emotions about this. I am glad I will not have to have a drain removed after surgery. But at the same time, I think I would like to know that all the yucky stuff was draining out, not just staying in me.

I just got out of the hospital yesterday. I had an open and my Dr. put two drain tubes in me. I empty them daily and my Dr. taught me how to strip them also. I will have the drains removed Thursday. All Drs.are different. As long as the contents in the drains are not blood, everything fine. I am glad I have the drains. It lets me see how I am healing inside.

Five of us in our family with lap RNY...no NG tubes, no drains. A catheter was placed in our bladders during surgery and removed before we woke up....IV fluids just until the following morning. All surgeons have their own particular routines....just be sure to ask these questions during your pre-op visit, so you (and your family) will be prepared. Best wishes!

I had open RNY last month and did not have any drain tubes. There was an NG tube in during surgery, but it was removed before I woke up in recovery.

I'm 6 days post-op. I did have a drain tube in. I had an IV and a cath. I had surgery on thursday. The cath came out friday morning, the IV came out Friday night, actually during the night because the machine kept beeping..awwww. lol. And the Dr came in saturday morning, removed the drain tube, and sent me home. :-).. 6 days post-op down 11lbs.

I had my drain tube in 3 days. It is too drain the old blood off your stomach and so they can see if there is any infection building up in there, through the color and smell of the drainage. It did not hurt just a nuisance to have. It does feel WEIRD when they take it out but not painful. Hope this helps.
