Question:
Does my new insurance provider have to cover my hernia repair/tummy tuck?

We are going through an aquisition at work. Our insurance carrier will change from Cigna to BCBS. I am in the process of obtaining approval through Cigna right now for my upcoming hernia repair and tummy tuck in August. However, our insurance carrier will change effective July 1,2002. So my question is, will BCBS be required to cover my surgery or will it be classified as "pre-existing"?    — Terri N. (posted on April 12, 2002)

Yes, if it is through your employer....they dont exclude pre-exsisting conditions...only if you had purchased health insurance on your own....Shari

I am in the same position myself. Had my WLS last Sept., changed ins. through my hubby's company in Jan., now need hernia repair & panni. I know the hernia repair would definately be covered, but the tummy tuck DOES NOT have to be covered (as it is considered 'cosmetic' through our new ins.). My surgeon told me my best bet would be to try to have them both done at the same time, that insurance companies would more likely cover the tummy tuck as an add-on that way. Anyhow, it's been two months, or more, and I'm still waiting approval from United Health Care. I wish you the best of luck :)

Terri, They can't not do the surgery because of pre-existing BUT they can not do it if it isn't part of the contract between your employer and the ins. co. I'd check with your HR dept. or your benefits coordinator. Also, you need to check if they cover Panniunlectomy's. Sometimes these are covered but the abdominoplasty isn't. One is usually considered "medical" due to strengthening the abdominal wall while the other is more cosmetic. Again, go to the source. Best wishes
