Question:
Does everyone who has had WLS wear a Medical Alert Bracelet?

Do they have to be 14K gold since you wear them all of the time?    — Robin Q. (posted on December 9, 2000)

I finally decided that for me personally having a Medic Alert bracelet was akin to wearing my seatbelt. I commute 60 miles a day through rural country on a two-lane state highway that I share with farm equipment, deer and other drivers traveling at high speed who may be elderly or intoxicated. I travel alone in the depths of the Midwestern winter. If I should have a mishap on the road, I would be rescued and transported by volunteer EMS workers from the local rescue squad. I want these people to know that I may need some special trauma care because my gastric system has been remodelled. I see the bracelet as preventative health care and hopefully, since I have it, I'll never need it. Did I mention I can sometimes be a bit superstious? Medic Alert has the familiar stainless steel bracelet but they also have bracelets in sterling, gold and titanium and they have necklaces in the same metals. This year for Christmas I gave myself a sterling Medic Alert bracelet.

Robin: I plan on purchasing a gold bracelet to wear after my surgery, leaving it on all the time. I've found lots of websites that sell them: I just have to decide on the one I can afford!!

My choice is not to wear one, if I am in a trauma, the last thing the emergency crew is going to do is try to put something IN my stomach. They will worry about maintaining my heart rate, breathing and fluids by IV. Anyone who cares about me and is notified will be able to tell the staff of my wls.

I forgot to mention the websites I found! They are: http://www.medical-id.com and http://www.goldmarkjewelry.com/medical_asp/bracelets.asp. Medical-ID has some neat antique pendants too. Also, the media alert website is www.medicalert.com.

I feel it is more than a medic alert bracelet. It tells me who I am and where I came from. If I am walking by myself and pass out I would like someone to know what I have and what I need
