Question:
Tips on Eating Slowly

I'm having a hard time making my self eat slowly (or slow enough that it doesn't hurt!). I just started regular foods a few days ago and suddenly its pretty hard. Any tips?    — Toni B. (posted on March 28, 2000)

Try using baby fork and spoon. Put them down beside your plate between each bite. Hope this helps.

I had a heck of time at first. It would take 30 to 45 minutes to eat a slice of turkey luncheon meat (part of my initial problem was not getting my food moist enough). I got pretty tired of meals that went cold long before I could finish eating them. Since I live by myself, reading a magazine or book with my meal helped. I would take a bite and then read for a bit, otherwise I would sit at my table staring at that small amount of food going cold. I also found that if I had someone to talk with during a meal, I could put my fork down between bites and carry on a conversation. Now at 5 months post-op all of that has improved and I eat much more normally.

Toni: If you're waiting to long to eat or until you're really hungry...You will eat too fast .. It's hard to break that habit...Try drinking water before eating your meal 30 mins before full 8 oz slowly....Then before eating your meal nibble on a cracker that way your not so starved and will slow down and relax and eat slower...

I know it is hard to learn a new eating style after a life time of eating fast and whole. IT does take time. Chew alot on one bite. Use a small plate with your meal, this sometimes will want you to make the meal to last longer. Just remember to chew very slowly, enjoy what you are eating, know what you are eating. Remember it takes time to learn new habits.

Hi Toni! One of my favorite things to do is to log on while I am eating. Now I don't do this during dinner:) but for breakfast and sometimes lunch, I get online and read in here or search the net. That forces me to put down my fork or spoon while I am typing (I am eating yogurt for breakfast now). Reading is another thing I like to do too! As you get used to slowing down, it comes easier. Good Luck!
