Question:
5 weeks post op when does the sickness stop?

I had lap RNY 5 weeks ago, started at 296 down to 249, I am sick most of the time, maybe, 1 -2 days a week I can keep food down the other days I even have trouble with my meds. I am so nauseaus all the time, and trying to get my water in makes it worse sometimes. I am eating solid food and one day a food that I can keep down will make me very sick the next day.I have discovered that I'm not a dumper. I just always have this feeling that I have to burp and it hurts so bad in my chest and then I vomit, when the food is gone I then vomit musus and bubbles this can go on for hours. I am seeing my Dr. on Monday but I was just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences.    — jane O. (posted on July 31, 2003)

I am sorry to hear you are so miserable, I would definatly make sure you are taking extra small bites, using a baby spoon, and chew 30 times or so.....usually the pain is an indication that you are going to vomit from what I am told, I hope your doc can give you some answers. The problem with eating something one day and then the next it makes you seick is something I hear often and form what I am told it doesn't seem to go away for some people, you might even have a stricture, which is easily fixed.....:)

Could this be what is called a stricture? And is a stricture a too small of an opening INTO and OUT of your new stomach??????

Sounds like it could be a stricture.....I've had 3 of them so far and I'm 7 weeks out.My main symptoms were, food feeling stuck, constant burping and the feeling of gas pressure trapped in my chest.I started off occasionally vomiting and then it progressed to constant vomiting which included vomiting frothy mucus. It is an easy fix...Your doc should order an outpatient endoscopy. If there is a narrowing then they will dilate the area to open it.You are sedated so you don't feel it.The stricture can come back and you might need to be dilated a second time for the area to stay open.

Sorry to hear that you are feeling so bad. I too felt awful for the first couple of months. I had severe nausea and smells just drove me crazy. I threw up everything I ate. You may want to talk to your doctor about checking to see if you have a stricture. I had one and have been dialated twice. It makes such a difference. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi Jane, I am 8 weeks today and I too have the same symtoms . . . when I don't weigh my food. If I over eat . . . or eat too fast. I have the same symtoms. Ugh! Good Luck! Michele :) RNY 6/3/03 56lbs

Try eating more slowly and smaller bites (about the size of an eraser)Also chew more. It was very hard for me to judge how much to eat in the beginning. Good Lux

I am 2 weeks post op and I feel the same way. I am having a hard time even wanting to eat. Not sure if that is much encouragement but at least you know you are not alone. I hear it is soooo worth it and the sickness will pass.

Hi Jane ... I had the same problem ... feeling nauseated 90% of the time! The doctor gave me some medication for the nauseausness, but it made me sleep for 10 hours (which I guess helped the nauseausness!) ... I think one of my problems was I wasn't eating enough .. or regularly enough. I kind of had to keep my stomach full by eating every 2-1/2 to 3 hours (like they told me to), otherwise, it would only take an instant to feel nauseated if I waited too long. It was really hard adapting to a "schedule" (I still have a hard time with it), but once I got that down, and my protein in ... I did start feeling different right around the six week mark (that was 2 days ago) ... all I can say is hang in there ... mention it to the doctor, but almost everyone I've talked to about it says it does go away. Good luck!
