Question:
Anyone post op having post nasal drip

2-1/2 weeks post op and am now suffering from post nasal drip. I will call my doc for suggestions, but in the mean time, I would like to know if others suffered with this and what helped to relieve it for you. This is a big problem for me as it is dripping into my stomach and causing me to become nasiated and to through up any thing that I drink or eat. PLEASE HELP!    — Rosa F. (posted on July 28, 2003)

Oh it's causing me to throw up too, not through up. LOL

My doctor had me take a zantac and a benedryl at bedtime. Worked like a charm.

I also have this same problem. I'm 5 months post up. I believe there was a question on the board last week regarding the same thing. It seemed to be the consensus this is caused when we eat too much and our pouch is full. Check back on some of the past q&a's I think you will find the answer you are looking for. I bought the answer as it seem to coincide with what is happening to me.

I, too, had this problem. I take 1 Benedryl at night and no longer have the problem. Make sure the remedy is ok with your surgeon. Best of luck!

Ah wouldn't it be nice if we could just blame overeating for everything. I've suffered with sinusitis most of my life, so I'm very aware of the symptoms I feel when it develops as opposed to just stuffing my face. LOL. It only takes me sticking a q-tip in my air to set off my sinus problems, which of course you know how good it feels to clean the ear out with a q-tip. However in the past, I could easily remedy the problem. My main reason for the question, was more so to find out if others were able to use over the counter rememdies without creating a bigger problem, like damage to the pouch. Next time, I'll be more specific.

Rosa, I've had problems with this my whole life but it got much, much worse following surgery. I got some good advice from my doctor and from other posters here. I am now taking either Benadryl or Sudafed Nighttime sinus medicine when I go to bed and the problem has resolved. One thing my doctor said was to try to find a formula that works for 12 hours. That was great advice. I take one at bedtime and in the morning my sinuses are clear as a bell and stay that way all day. Give it a try! Good luck. Jody

I want to thank all of you for your quick and very helpful responses. I spoke with my doc a while ago, he's familiar with my nasal problems and says it's ok to use benadryl or however it's spelled. And to anyone that was offended by what I thought was a humorous crack about over eating, my apoligies and please no more private emails calling me a smart a** are nec. You are right, overeating can cause a similar problem.

I have a lot of allergy problems, too. I take a prescription nasal spray called Astelin. It works most of the time. If I have a break-thru sinus problem, I use Benadryl. It is extremely "safe" to use long term (my daughter's dr even said that if she had allergy problems on a long-term basis it was OK to use every day). It does taste disgusting, though!

Since surgery I have had running nose, and sneeze a lot more almost like I have allergies now.

I experienced the same problem from about week 3 to week 10. My surgeon gave me Clariten which seemed to help. It is a lousy problem especially so early in the process when it complicates moving on to soft and then solid food. Unfortunately, there are few meds that can be taken that won't impact your new pouch. Good luck.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!! I WENT THROUGH THE SAME THING FOR THE 1ST 2 MOS AFTER SURGERY. I GOT THE CLARITN -D THAT DISOLVES UNDER YOUR TONGUE, IT WAS A LIFE SAVER. I LEARNED THAT MOST OF MY NAUSEA AFTER SURGERY WAS CAUSED BY POST NASAL DRIP. I WOULD SUGGEST TO ALL THE PRE - OPS HAVE CLARITAN - D THAT DISOLVES UNDER THE TONGUE HANDY. THEY SELL THEM OVER THE COUNTER.
