Question:
What can we use for constipation?

I've increased my water intake but still am having trouble going? Can we take Milk of Magnesia or any other types of medications? Thanks everyone.    — [Anonymous] (posted on January 26, 2002)

Hi! I am 2 weeks post op and am having the same problem. My surgeon says that it is normal to have some sort of constipation. He says that If I wanted to I could use Milk of Magnesia. Tracy

I used Colace which worked well for me! I had horrible constipation which led to anal fissures which is surely something you should try to avoid. It seemed to take a few months for my bowels to straighten themselves out post-op. It seems like now at 7 months that even though I don't have that much fiber from food that I do not have constipation problems. I may go 2 days without a b.m., but then I do go and very regularly then. Best Wishes!

I've been using Senokot (actually the generic brand) which is a natural vegetable laxative -- probably about once every week to ten days to every two weeks. Just to keep the pipes working. I can't stand being constipated.

If you are unsure of taking the oral meds, try a glycerin suppository. Very effective, simple, and painless! Shelley

Spinach! Go to your local "ChickenOut Rotisserie" or "Boston Market" and get a side-serving of their creamed spinach. Just a few bites will profide 'gentle, overnight relief', plus, you'll be getting some nutrients! It works for me...

I just eat a couple of dried prunes. Within 24hrs things are going again.

I found that what works for me is having some oatmeal for breakfast. Within a couple of hours I am having a bowel movement. When I don't have oatmeal, I immediately become constipated.
