Question:
Is anyone's hair breaking?

I am 10 weeks post op and down 52 pounds. My hair is not so much falling out (though it is a little) But breaking off. When I put products in my hair I notice that my hands are covered with one inch long pieces of hair and I have all of these little pieces sticking out all around my face. I have not heard this one before and am just wondering if anyone else has expreienced the same thing.    — Carol S. (posted on March 28, 2003)

Yes! It happened to me. Lots of breakage and falling out. Thank God I was blessed with lots of hair because according to my family I shouldn't have any more.

What are you taking for vitamins? Are you taking a dry form of vite E? d-alpha form? Are you using any sort of Hair, Skin Nails product that contains biotin? The vite E is probably critical, since it affects more than hair in your body, but the HSN products are a nice extra. I'm assuming you're already getting 60-90g protein supplement per day.

ORIGINAL POSTER HERE: I am taking a multi (2 per day) as well as b12 and my protein is never under 60g usually closer to 80+ plus I get biotin and maybe too much vitamin E in my protein supplements. I am confused and dismayed. Don't the gods know that I have a wedding to go to (I am my sister's matron of honor) at the end of May? Tee hee

Some people are affected by the anesthetic and it will cause breakage. Using a vinegar rinse will help to neutralize the hair. Use 1/4 cup with equal parts of water and pour over the hair, then moisturize as you normally would. You will be surprised at what a nice shine you will get. Do this once a month or once every other month. It is the best and cheapest way to clarify the hair. Have also know people to use beer!

I haven't had surgery yet, but I had an operation in October 2002 in which I was put under general anesthesia, and I'm still battling hair loss and breakage. Fortunately, it's tapering off now, and the only people who notice what's going on with my hair are me and my hairdresser. I started taking mega-vitamin supplements last month to get prepared for wls surgery. Don't need anymore hair loss if I can help it.
