Question:
How long was it before you were able to drink o.j. and eat oranges

I love o.j. and love oranges. I know that initially it is recommended to refrain from citrus fruits and juices. How long was it before you could tolerate it comfortably?    — Maria A. M. (posted on May 9, 2002)

Maria- I am 9 days out from my LAP RNY and I was never told to refrain from eating citrus fruits. I have been eating a half a grapefruit since the forth day and I haven't had any problems. I wouldn't try drinking a glass of juice yet, because of all the sugar. -Mike Nisenson

Hi... I am 5 wks post op and have been eating oranges for about a week now. I was never told not to but was dealing with nausea and things till then. Our Dr. advises to avoid juice though because of high concentration of natural sugar and the fact that it doesn't help as much nutritionally as whole foods. Good luck to you.

Hi Maria - I have drank all kinds of juice from the begining. I don't think using juice as your main source of liquid would be a good idea but in the begining whatever works is sometimes the only thing that matters. I am 4 1/2 months out and I love fresh oranges (I have had them since maybe 2 months out). What I do though is chew the slices and spit out the bulk of the pulp. If you look and see how much room just the pulp of one slice takes up you can see why I do this. I can eat half an orange this way. I do eat some pulp just not most of it. Hope this helps :-)

I still can't drink much OJ at a time, or I'll dump. (I'm 13.5 months post-op). As for oranges, I still have to eat them slowly, since they are bulky and fibrous. (They fill up the pouch quickly.) I can eat an orange over a half-hour or so now.

My surgeon places his patients on a full liquid diet 2 days post-op RNY with no restrictions on any types of juices. I was drinking orange juice as soon as I arrived home from the hospital and never had any problems. Good luck!

I've been drinking orange juice since the day I got home from the hospital with no problems.

like others state here, i came home after an open r.n.y. and began drinking o.j. from day one,, i love oranges but at first i feared the pulp, so i got canned manderin orange slices,, low pulp, and they are so good,,they are in light syrup,, but i rinse them with water first,,a great snack with few calories involved,, i am 6 months out now, down 155 pounds, 50 more to go,, and i still have the cans of manderin oranges a few times a week,, good luck,,
