Question:
What kind of protein bars are safe to eat and also taste good?

I am trying to prepare myself for my after surgery needs so I won't have to think of this stuff later on...I need to know what protein drink tastes best, protein bars? And where do I go to get sublingual B12?? Thanks for any help with post- op vitamin/nutritional needs...    — Kristine P. (posted on February 4, 2002)

K, I found it REAL hard to drink the protien drinks that you have to mix yourself. I drink Myoplex premixed drinks for breakfast, they are the best I have found, and I also eat the Myoplex protien bars for lunch, both low carb. There IS a protien drink similar to Crystal Light made by Isopure that is supposed to be good, I haven't been able to find it where I live tho. As for vitamins, any health food store should have all that you need. I'm four months post op and take 2 Bugs Bunny chewables, 3 Silica (for my hair), 50 mg. CoQ-10, 1 B12, 1 Iron. Everyone will have different combinations of vitamins, minerals and suppliments they take, the best source of information on this would be your doctor.

Yeah, good luck with that. I just bought a bunch of protein bars to try out. Hated every one of them. I even tried the Carb Solutions that I hear people talk about - puke. Everything taste like dry wax in the form of a bar. Ick. Not to mention that the bars themselves are expensive. I think I will stick to FOOD for my protein! :)

Hello and good luck! Well, I must admit that when it comes to protein bars and shakes, there is not a lot that tastes all that great out there. But don't get discouraged, there is SOMETHING out there you will like. She hasn't posted yet, but Micelle Curran owns Vitalady and they have all sorts of protein sources in many different flavors. Please go to her website at vitalady.com and look around. Surely you will find something there you like. As for the B-12, GNC makes a great product. Any questions, get in touch with me! Amy

Hi K, I have tried lots of protein bars and they are all discusting, but I did find one at Walmart that I really like and it doesnt taste bad to me, it is called Met-RX Protein Plus, I like the Chocolate Fudge flavor. It has 34 grams of Protein and only 2 grams of sugar. I think they are tasty and it satisfies my chocolate cravings. They are $2.27 at the Walmart by my house. Good luck to you and let me know what you think of them. RNY surgery almost 11 months ago and lost -219 pounds!!! Valerie

Spent ALOT of money trying any and all protein bars and powders to no avail! Finally found: DESIGNER WHEY protein bars. They have alot of flavors: mint, berry, expresso, malt, lemon, double chocolate. My favorites are berry and dbl. chocolate. These are great, I would eat them if I didn't have to! When I open them at work, I always end up having to share! :-) I like to open them and cut them in little pieces and freeze, they taste like candy! Designer Whey also has great protein powder. (vanilla and choc. are the best)and I use them both! Protein bars: 31 gm. protein

K, I buy my sublingual B-12 at our local HEB (grocery store). I hate almost all protein bars, I'm very picky about them. There are two kinds that I not only like, but love the taste of and even my little nephew begs for bites of them. They are Pria Bars, which I buy by the case at Sam's club and are very low in sugar. They are made by the makers of Power Bars (which I hate) and taste like candy bars. And, secondly, I love Luna bars. A friend of mine, who is a personal trainer, turned me on to these tasty little protein bars. They have great flavors such as Chai Tea, Lemon Zest, Lime, Orange, S'Mores etc... and I buy them at the grocery store, Target, Walmart and many other places. You can buy them in singles just to try out. The only one I'm not thrilled about is the nutz one. These protein bars aren't super packed with protien like many of the others. The Luna bars have 10g protein and about 220 cals. The Pria bars are light with 5g protein and just 110 cals. However, they do at least taste great and are good to throw in your bag for a quick fix. I'll often eat one for breakfast or take one with me when I know I may not have time to stop for a meal. Best wishes to you.

Hi. Great posts. I buy my sublingual B-12 from drugstore.com. You get 250 tablets (500 mgs each) for about $20.00. And while we're on the topic, vitacost.com has chewable calcium citrate wafers for a great price. (I had a hard time finding calcium citrate in a chewable form!) Vitacost also has the s/l B-12 for a competitive price. Their service was great and they didn't stick it to me for shipping and handling, even to here (Hawaii).

My favorite so far is AdvantEdge apples and cinnamon flavor. Of all the protein bars I've tried so far, that one tastes less like a protein bar and more like real food. lol!
