Question:
I've had a temp and nausea for 9 days now. Help!!!

I'm 6 week post op open rny. I've been running a fever of 101-102 for 9 days and suffering from debilitating nausea. I have a little tenderness in my abdomen but not bad. I can keep liquids down but have no desire for any food. My labs were fine-potassium was 3.4 (3.5 to 5.0) is normal, no elevated white blood cell count. I had a CAT scan of my abdomen which shows no problems. My surgeon put me on an antibiotic but can't figure out why I have the temp. I see him again on Monday, any ideas what this could be? Has anyone had similar problems? I'm truly miserable. Thanks for any responses.    — Brenda H. (posted on June 16, 2001)

I dont know about the fever but at 6 weeks did they scope your pouch. This is around the time some unlucky folks get a stoma obstruction. They can look at it and stretch it with a balloon. It comes from the growth of scar tissue during healing.

Post Op I also suffered from a high fever. This was caused by a leak in my pouch. It was so small that they had a hard time detecting it the first time. I had to do an Upper GI 3 times to detect it--YUCK!!!! Afterwards, I was put on 2 week antibiotic and fever went down within that time. Fever of 101-102 is pretty high considering internal body temp. lowers after surgery. Maybe ask your surgeon on Monday about possibilities of leak again to be on the safe side. Good Luck!
