Question:
Is it okay to have a drink or two with friends a few weeks post-op?

Is there any certain alcoholic drinks that are definitely a no-no? I enjoy a Diet Coke with some whisky in it once in a while, will this be something I have to swear off after surgery? Is beer or wine okay?    — [Anonymous] (posted on December 30, 2001)

Well, as long as the few drinks are with friends I think it will be ok....

It is not a good idea to drink alcohol or soda after surgery. You can read a lot about this in the library. The fact that you are thinking of doing it a few weeks after surgery really makes it a bad idea - your stomach will probably not be healed enough to handle it. Some people are able to have a drink every now and then a few MONTHS down the road. Also, since you are talking about going out for drinks, you really wouldn't want to risk a possible dumping episode out in public. It would be wise to discuss this subject with your surgeon.

I had a couple sips of a Margarita, and expierenced my first episode of dumping, OMG was it horrible. An all together experience I had never faced. I have drank a Bloody Mary and a Beer that was stirred with a straw to rid excess carbonation without any problem, nothing with the high fructose mix like ritas and other fruity frozen drinks. But I would suggest waiting a couple more weeks and always try things at home first.

You can certainly drink alcohol after surgery, BUT I would wait 6 months or a year. Your pouch is still new and anything could cause it to be upset. Remember the first couple of months you should be focusing on weight loss and eating protein (you should always focus on good eating habits, but the first few months will be extra difficult). Alcohol is just empty calories. I suggest you wait 6 months or so before you have a drink.

I still drink just water when I'm with friends and they're drinking. The alcohol will affect you much quicker with your new stomach. Since my RNY open I have gotten completely off coffee, tea & booze and I really don't miss any of them, except when I smell really good coffee.

I'm two years post op. I waited aprox. 15 months before trying alcohol. I use diet coke and rum or a glass of wine. I am careful never to drink if I have to drive because one drink now, for me, is the same as 3 or 4 before surgery. I get really tipsy. The effect usually wears off after about 20 minutes but it is still not a pleasant feeling to me and I believe I would be really dangerous on the road. Since you may get very drunk, very quickly, you may want the first couple times you try a drink to be in the privacy of your own home.
