Question:
What on earth is going on? Sick each time I eat...

Hello, I'm about 5 months post op. Everything was going ok til about a week ago. Since then, every time I eat or drink, I feel a little sick. I'm not heaving, everything is staying down, but I can only eat a very very small amount (very much smaller than before a week ago, like 3 or 4 small bites vs. a 1/2-3/4 cup I was eating at every meal) and no matter what I eat or drink, I get a nauseous feeling and my intestines make all kinds of noise. I feel gassy (on the inside) and bloated, and it usually goes away about a half hour after eating or drinking. Again, it's not because I'm eating the wrong foods...it happens no matter WHAT I eat or drink, so I know it's not dumping. Could this be early symptoms of a stoma in the process of narrowing? Or something else I'm not thinking of? It's starting to really worry me. Thanks in advance. Eala Clarke    — Melissa S. (posted on November 7, 2002)

Guess I'm curious if your bowel movements are regular. You could be backed up. One thing I was told to watch closely for was long-term constipation, as it can indicate a possible kink in the intestine. If it continues you should certainly talk to your surgeon about it.

At about six months post-op, I started having similar symptoms. I did throw up a couple of times but usually was just terribly nauseated. Well, I waited about a week before I called my surgeon. He got an endoscopy scheduled as quickly as possible (two days later) and I had an internal suture that had worked it's way into the pouch and was causing a small blockage. The doctor snipped the suture and after a couple of days of IVs for dehydration, I was fine. If I had called him sooner, I probably wouldn't have gotten dehydrated. My suggestion is that you call your surgeon. Open RNY 11/29/01 -156 pounds
