Question:
I have a hernia, and am considering having a tummy tuck,

I have lost 114 pounds, 23 to go. I am considering having a tummy tuck while having my hernia repair done. Should I wait until I lose the remaining 23 pounds before having this done, or will I lose weight with the tummy tuck? How much time out of work will I need to have this done. I sit all day, so it would not be a hardship returning to work. Any advice would be appreciated.    — Valerie M. (posted on May 6, 2002)

My plastic surgeon said not to have the tummy tuck until I was within 20 pounds of my goal weight and that I would need to be off work for at least 2 weeks, possibly 3.

I had my original tummy tuck done at the time of my RNY, primarily due to financial reasons. I then had a hernia repair 9 months post op and my surgeon took a little skin off at that time too. I am no doctor but would think you would be close enough to get your TT. Doing it with the hernia repair beats having two recovery periods. Just a thought.

I was just approve for hernia repair w/panni. I was told by my PS that I would loose 10-15 lbs. with the TT. I don't work, but have been told recovery will be much like WLS, the pain more topical though. My hernia showed up in mid-Feb., I was about 20-25 lbs away from goal at the time, but my surgeon told me I was close enough for a TT, if I wanted one. This will put me at goal, give or take 5. Good Luck!

I had a umbilical hernia in four places, my surgeon repaired the hernia and performed a partial abdominoplasty, that is from the naval down. It has been 5 years. I am very happy with the results and my insurance BCBS paid for it all. However, they told me that the more you lose, the better the results. As you lose weight the fat cells shrink, the smaller they are the more of them they are able to remove. Thus, the flatter it will stay should you put on a little weight. I recommend trying to lose that last little bit, that is unless you are in constant pain from the hernia. Good Luck!!!
