Question:
How long after RNY does it take the average person to get to their goal weight?

Just kinda wondering what everyone's experiences have been. I know we can't really compares ourselves, realistically, to someone else....as we are all proportioned differently and have different metabolisms. I'm just trying to get some idea of how I am doing, I suppose. My surgery was Dec. 30th, 2008. I am down 83 pounds. Thanks for your answers!    — PaulaJ (posted on July 12, 2009)

I reached goal in 9.5- 10 months, but if you have lots to lose it can take up to a year + 6 months. Just keep doing what you are suppose to and you will get there. Everone is different..i know you get sick of hearing this answer, but its true! Best of luck n Hugs, kim

I just had my RNY 6/29/2009 and have lost 21 lbs so far. I have heard many people and even at my doctors office. they reach their goal about 80-110 lbs within the 9-12 mos period.? about 100-150 within 12-18 mos? I am sure that other things determine the final outcome. I had 110 to lose. 90 to go now. I just want to be healthy. Im not so concerned how fast or slow I lose it, as long as its gone sometime in the future and I can keep it off easier than I have been able to thus far in my life. Best Wishes to you!!!You are doing wonderful it sounds like !6-7 mos postop and over 80lbs gone! WOW!!! congrats!

I had LAP/RNY on 2/15/07 (over two years ago). At my heaviest - 286lbs. I lost and was at goal at 6 months after surgery (180). But I continued to lose weight - I met my goal of 180 and kept on losing. By the time 1 year came around... I was 150. My body has a new set weight of 145-155 (depending on what I eat, what I am retaining, etc. I stay within the 10 lbs listed above and that is fine for me. Good luck to you.

We had our surgery on the exact same date! What a way to bring in the New Year! I have also lost about the same amount. 87 pounds and kind of stuck in one place. My BMI has dropped from 44 to 31 so that is very exciting. I have about 50 more pounds and it will take me a little longer to lose that I am guessing. Good luck to you! Tina

I started at 286 before my surgery...lost some weight before and after surgery. I am stuck around 190 now, so lost a grand total of 96 lbs so far. My surgery was Jan. 8, 2009, so I am 6 months post op. My hair has also thinned out quite significantly since about the fourth month. I just cut it to shoulder length to make it seem thicker..seems to have worked....good luck...

WOW! That is a big question. We are all very individualized as to how much and how long it takes to loose. Just remember the honeymoon period is 18 months. After that, it's possible to continue to loose, just harder. I had surgery 12-3-08 at 352lbs. Today I'm 231 lbs. 7 mos out and 120 lbs off. From a 36 to a 20. Still much more to loose. 96 - 51 lbs. depending on if your talking to my doc, me or my husband. We all have an ideal number in our head, but I like the idea of my body having its' own set weight. I'm looking forward to what that will be. The very best of luck to you girl...keep up the hard work!
