Question:
Any advice on Protein??

Hi- I am 5 weeks post-op vbg...not getting enough protein. Looked are Isopure(50mg Protein) in the store. I also saw the sample pack thats for sale on OH website. Has anyone tried the sampler pack? I cannot tolerate this stuff so I hate to spend alot on 1 type and then not like it. I have alread tried the premixed canned shakes. I bought one of each. Didn't like them and they didn't have a whole lot of protein. Any suggestions??    — MariaRN (posted on September 27, 2007)

I drink the Chocolate carnation instant breakfast. Put it in a blender with a few pieces of ice and a cup of milk and it kinda like a shake. I tried the whey protein from GNC and slim fast and I couldn't tolerate them.

They are pricey but I use liquid protein bullets. They come in orange, grape and fruit punch - orange is kinda gross but the other two are good. They come in varrying grams - I get 42g - one a day. Half in the AM and half in PM. My doc recommends them to patients. Try Vitamin Shoppe or online - my GNC doesn't carry them. I think the maker is IDS Proteins. Good luck!!! ~Sarah in VA

I went through the same thing you did, only thank God wasted my $ on the Body Fortress powder which started making me nausious same time it did for you. I read on here (thank God) that someone else used Anywhey tasteless protein. That I can tolerate and it is almost completely tasteless! I add it to crystal light, ice tea, flavored water etc. I will be 6 months post op tomorrow and I've been using it since about 5 weeks out. I get it at GNC (cheaper than on here or online period). A smaller container costs about $24 and the larger container costs $44. Good luck and God Bless!

Any of these are what I use: 1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet). 2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken. 3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended. 4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or hand blender. Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat. I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of vit D3).

I bought the sampler pack that Bariatric Eating has on its website and it really helped me narrow down what I liked and disliked. The bullets need to be ice cold and have water added to them to be drinkable. Since you have already had surgery, Bariatric Eating at bariatriceating.com will send you two free samples. All you have to do is tell them who your doctor is and they'll send you the two you choose.

I'm 8 months out and I drink the ISOPURE NO CARB Protein fruit drinks. When I started drinking those I mixed them with water. My favorite flavors are Apple Melon, Alpine Punch and Frost Grape. I've gotten to the point now where I drink them straight and cold and sip on it while working out. Don't try the Orange -- it is NASTY! Try those mixed with water, there is still a little after taste; however, you'll get your protein and water in. Good luck.

I had a very hard time with protein as well I hated all that I tasted. You can go to the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC and they have the protein bullets they are pretty expensive thou you get 12 for around 30.00 but you only use 1 a day check the website out to learn more about them www.idssports.com. Basically I just gulp them down they taste real sweet but they taste better then any of the other protein drinks I have tried. Good Luck.........

I am 4 months post op and I had the same problem. Couldn't stand any of the protein drink samples that I tried. I drink achiev1 which is wonderful. It is a coffee protein drink. They are coming out with a chocolate one that is wonderful and will switch to that as soon as it comes out because of the caffine. I figured though that I'd drink more water to make up for the caffine that is in Achiev1 because it's better to get the protein in then not. I also use Dymatize Toffee/Buttercreme and Orangecicle power in de caf coffee. For some reason I can tolerate the protein in coffee. Maybe the coffee flavor masks the chemical taste.

GNC carries a liquid protein called "Properformance Liquid Protein" It is a fruit punch flavor and I mix it with SF Walmart Fruitpunch. On the bottle it says you can drink it straight, but I only did that once! It has 18g of protein per serving. Also Protidiet is pretty good, 15g in 4-5oz of liquid. You can get it from some surgeons and online. Eary on the low volume of liquid was a plus....drink it and get it over with! lol Remember though you are probally not going to find a "YUMMMM give me another!!" you are looking for least offensive. Goodluck!

I ordered a bunch of samples of different powders from vita lady.com. It was a good way to try several different things for a reasonable price.

Hi, I hope this helps. I ordered a sample pack of protein drinks especially for bariatric patients off BariatricEating.com. It cost me about $60 but it has 14 different samples, a bottle to make shakes with and a great book with recipies. I hope that you can check it out. I have found a great chocolate peanut butter protein shake that doesn't even taste like a protein drink. Best of luck... remember. BariatricEating.com.

I just read another post about unjury.com having an unflavored protein. I think I am going to try that.

I drink Whey drinks. One is fruit strawberry banana and another is smooth peanut butter chocolate which is real good and can order online. www.store.bariatriceating.com or 1-888-777-4202. I like both drinks and do not need to add a lot of water. Taste good.

Hi! I had a real problem with the taste of the protein products as well, I've done the GNC Isopure and the different protein powders and still found them to be "YUCK". Then I noticed through the web-site of Barix Clinics - Store, that they had gotten a new product named "Chike". It is AWSOME! The orange tastes like "dreamsicles" the banana is really good and I never liked strawberry flavored milk, but I LOVE the strawberry flavor of "Chike". The price on their website if very reasonable and shipping is not to bad either (stuff usually comes FedEx, within a few days). Good Luck!

Hi, You need to try Chike! It has a great taste and comes in 5 different flavors. I add 1% milk to it and it puts the protein up to 35 grams. The website is www.csshakes.com. Try it I think you will ike them.
