Question:
My Post-op protocol calls for whey protein. I found grape liquid shots. Are they ok?
I had heard finding a good tasting whey protein powder is nearly impossible. Any suggestions? The box of 10 shots were pretty expensive for only to last 10 days. — carolyn153 (posted on October 12, 2007)

Yes, Anywhey tasteless protein powder. I get mine at GNC. Just be
forewarned that prices of the whey protein powders have increased because
of the increase in price of milk. I get the smaller container of it, and I
just paid $28.88 total for it...There is a larger container that is $40
something...Once you put this powder in crystal light or tea or tropicanna
squeeze, you can barely taste it...I have 3 containers of Body fortress
that I still have to use up, but have this one for days I just don't feel
like "toleratiing" the body fortress...Good luck, God Bless!!!!!

Are the grape liquid shots you are talking about the ones that look like
they are in a big test tube? I use those to help me get my protein in
since I can't drink a lot at a time right now. I am just ten days post-op.

I'm preop but have been trying different powders. The one I've decided on
(and is the one recommended by my WLS nutritionist) is Unjury.
It mixes pretty well, doesn't have that grainy taste, isn't overly sweet,
and they have a hot chicken soup that's good and different.
Some pharmacies carry it, or you can order it (or sample sizes) at
http://www.unjury.com
Let me know if you like it if you decide to try it!

The shots are way worse then the whey protein powder when it comes to taste
and nutrition. They are ok in emergencies but honestly... according to my
nutrionalist they are not the highest grade protein. They are made from
Collegen where the powders are mainly Whey. Whey is better!
If you go to Bariatriceating.com they have some awesome protein powders. I
can't stand Costco's or Walmart protein powders.. the after taste is just
way too much! But the Nectar Cappuccino flavor is awesome! I have it warm
in the morning and sometimes iced in the afternoons. It tastes just like
coffee and chocolate. The Nectar Fuzzy Navel tastes just like your morning
O.J.
I also like all the flavors of Whey Gourmet. I bought the Chocolate
Peanut butter and the Pina Coloda and it's amazing! They also have
chocolate chip mint and banna strawberry and other ice cream like flavors
that I can't wait to try. My protein shakes are now a treat instead of a
'have to'. :)
Hope that helps,
Shakeira

Have you ever heard of Pro-Stat 64? It has 15 grams of Protein in 1 oz and
is easy to digest. Check it out at: www.prostat.com. The 64 is for
WLS patients. They have an unflavored, wild cherry (tast like cough surup)
and butter pecan. You can buy it is individual ounces or in 32oz. The
unflavored can be put into anything. Good Luck

Any of these are what I use:
1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender
or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel
sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or
hand blender.
Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon
fights belly fat.
I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of
vit D3).

Thanks to everyone answering my question! I am so glad all of you
responded because it gives me lots of options to look in to. I'm just
pre-planning before surgery and want to have everything ready beforehand.
Oh, the grape shots that I found ARE the ones that are called New Whey and
look like they are in a test tube. So, I should mix it with some Crystal
Light? Interesting! Thanks again!

Hi! I went to BariatricEating.com and got a Whey protein sample... it cost
me about $60, but it came with a great book with recipes for after... and
about 17 different samples of proteins. I like the Chocolate Peanut Butter
one... mixes with 4 oz of water! Can't beat it! Hope this helps.

my nutritionist strongly urges NOT to use the protein shots. she did
research on them and they are not all that they are said to be. order
samples of protein powders from allthewhey.com or bariatriceating or
vitalady and see which ones you can tolerate. i like the walker from
vitacost.

I could never find a good tasting powder they are all nasty to me. I heard
they have a tastleless one but never tried it. I am a fan of the liquid
protein bullets like you bought but I do agree they are expensive we have
to get the protein in one way or another either buy the expensive good
tasting ones are the inexpensive nasty ones.....Take your PICK......GOOD
LUCK

I absolutely love Nectar Ice tea flavored protein. It is a whey isolate
which tastes better to me. I like my drink with about 10 oz of water and a
splenda packet and one scoop of the protein. Others that have tried it in
my support group either love it or hate it so its an aquired taste. You
can find sample one serving packets of this protein everywhere. Godd
LUCK!!
