Question:
would this make "you" wonder/

Hi guys, went to see my surgeon on the 8th of this mo. and i have lost 45 lbs. surgery was 11-26-07 and i know the weight loss is good, but my surgeon told me, i could eat basically what i wanted. well stay away from fast food, and sugar. im not sure if i really understood all this. im still eating soft foods. and then he told me to begin my 30 min cardio workout. so am i to just exercise, and eat less, and not worry about anything? i dont get it????????? i feel good, and i hadent planned on eating any fast food, one there is none in this town:) and 2 i can barely get soft food down... can i have your opinions please... what would you do? i trusted my surgeon then, and i would like to think i still can!! who do you listen too? surgeon-or nut?    — kimcrain (posted on January 11, 2008)

I'd definitely talk with your nutritionist. That's a scary answer. You can't eat whatever you want, protein should be your primary focus. I had my RNY on 11/7/07 and I still can't finish all the food recommended. Don't worry about not advancing faster. Some people take longer, like I said, I'm still working on it.

Hi Km A similar thing happen to a friend of mine that had surgery at the same barix clinic as me, her Doc told her she could eat anything she wanted which i found really strange cause when i went for my 2 month check up on monday my doctor told me i should stay away from fatty foods ,sugar, bread pasta and rice so basically any carbs so i'm just sticking with what my doc says he knows best i guess! this is my second time around and i'm doing everything by the book cause if i would get the ok to be able to eat watever i wanted that would just be trouble for me. I decided to change my eating habits and start a healthy lifestyle and stay on the right track this time for myself and my family i want my kids to have a more fun and healthy mother.I think you know what is best for you just do what feels right for you and know your limitations on the food you choose to eat cause being told by your Doc you can eat watever you want sounds crazy especially to a patient who had this type of surgery isn't this why we had this surgery in the first place? from eating watever we wanted ? lol Good luck to ya and keep on losing!

Kim, Bill Here. I think your Doc meant you could eat anything on the list, but I know he would not want you to eat fast foods or fatty foods or sugar loaded foods. By the way, Congratulations on your great weight loss. Besides since you are a vegetarian, Other than sugar, butter and whole mile, what kind of trouble do you think you would get into. Are there any Vegetarian only fast foods?

I had surgery 10-31-07 and at my 2 month check up my doctor told me the same thing, that I could eat anything....on the recommended list and to start trying new foods and see how I handle them. I have done that and found out I can even eat some things I wish I couldn't but I'm still good and losing weight. I hit a plateau the entire month of December and didn't lose a pound and then Jan. 1st, I saw results. Just be careful and go ahead and experiment and find out what you can tolerate. Congrats on the weight loss.

Kim IMAO I would not take that kind of advise. Especially after having gone through all that you have been through to get to where you want to be. My Dr. advises us to never never never to eat rice bread or pasta. Also eat low carbs and low fat foods. You should always eat your protein first. If you ate whatever you wanted you could stretch your pouch and/or get back into those old eating habits. Best of Luck

Hi Kim! I too was just in to see the surgeon, but it was for my 3 month post-op. I saw the nurse practitioner, however, and she asked what I've been eating. I can finally have toast, but pretty much so crispy, it's more than toast, and I can only eat a bite of that. I still can't do breads, and a lot of meats still get stuck too. I feel like I haven't advanced that much, from semi-soft foods, and yet she states that I'm pretty much on a regular diet. SMILE...hmm... not sure what she eats...but this is NOT regular to me. I guess they don't always realize that we're so attentive to every word they say....looking and longing for the right advice....that when they state something so matter of factly, that we are often left confused. I have noticed that I can tolerate more food, (amounts that is) which troubles me some...but I've also noticed that with more food intake, I'm losing more too. Strange. So there must be something to that starvation mode that your body goes into. My metabolism seems to have recharged finally and my energy is slowly increasing. I've been ill with bronchitis and sinus issues for well over a month, so my exercise was really down to nothing and I still lost. I'm going to just follow the guidelines laid out in whatever paperwork they've given me...and if I were you...I'd do the same. I have discovered that even some of the professionals don't read their own literature....smile. You're doing awesome and keep up the great work. Lotsa hugs....Cheryl

It's quite possible that your doctor meant "eat what you want" as in you don't have to restrict your diet to purees and soft foods. Staying away from fast food and sugar seems like good advice to me!!! If you are having trouble with soft foods, then you need to let the surgeon know (if you haven't already). Who do you listen to... surgeon or nutritionist....both!!! I can't imagine that your nutritionist wants you to eat fast food and sugar.... or that s/he doesn't want you to do 30 minutes of cardio. :) My guess is that your surgeon sees himself as being responsible for the surgical part.... and expects you to get the nutritional guidance from your nutritionist. If you are getting contradictory info from them, then go with what seems right and if you don't trust yourself, check in with us, do some research on the net, or ask for a 2nd/3rd opinion. Good luck to you.
