Question:
eating beef

I was SO embarrased last night at my boyfriend's house,he fixed a nice dinner of beef stew...the meat was tender in the crockpot,but after a few minutes, I had to run to the bathroom and throw up..I thought I chewed it well? I'm over a year out of my surgery....has anyone else experienced this with beef? Thank you for you answers...Linda Arnold    — LindaA (posted on February 16, 2009)

Actually that happens to me when I eat chicken. I have been able to eat beef with no problem so far. I was afraid to try eating beef. Eventually I tried it and was ok. I keep trying chicken and no matter how it is preparedl, it just comes right back up.

I am just starting out and reading all I can. I was banded on the 11th and am not even close to eating solids yet, but I have a question....when you eat beef and chix do you cut it into "pencil eraser" sized pieces? Do you still get stuck? I know we all do our best to not get stuck...it is almost a life lesson. Did you get stuck before this? Kimberly

I have to be very careful with beef. I can eat it but I have to chew alot more even if I cut it up very small. I have alot more trouble beef than pork or chicken so it is just a matter of what works for you.

I'm about 2 and a half years out and I still can not do beef. At all, you can drown it sauce, beat it with a hammer, run it over with a semi...it doesn't matter what you do to try to make it soft, it will always get stuck, it will hurt and it will come right back up. I can do chicken, it hurts to but it stays down(most of the time).

It took years before I could eat beef without trouble. Even up til last year (4 years po) beef would hit my pouch like a rock! At 5 years, I don't seem to have that trouble anymore. I can't eat as much beef as I can other meats though...I have to wonder if it's the fat content in beef...Beef has both sat fat and cholesterol and I personally cannot handle food high in cholesterol...Like eggs even used to make me very ill as well for a few years po ...At year 5 though my pouch is like a rock! It handles most things quite well...I still have high sugar intolerance though and lactose intolerance as well...Some things get easier and some things start to bother you...you just have to keep trying things as you go...I cannot eat sugar alcohols and some other artificial sweeteners...They leave me in such pain I could eat real sugar and not get as ill! So I stick with natures sugar and eat fruit and the few things that are SF that do not bother me! Try not to try new foods again when you are out! Then again some days you will do good with something and the next day it makes you ill...All I can say is it gets better and before you know it, you're eating quite regularly again...just much smaller and healthier!

I can eat a very small amount of hamburger if it's very very moist, but that's about it. Beef stew, pot roast, any of that stuff just doesn't work. I'm 15 months out.

I have problems with certain types of beef still. I'm just over 5 months out. I can eat ground beef, but as soon as I try a steak or beef cubes, it comes back up!

I have never had a problem with chicken or beef, but do have a problem with some pork and grease. I am 3 and half years out, but even when I could eat beef and chicken I could and never had problems with it.

i am 4 1/2 yrs post RNY. i too, have a hard time with beef. it has to be extremely tender and juicy and i still have to cut it into tiny pieces. i don't eat very often and if i do, it's a very small quantity. i also have the problem with chicken that is too dry (ie white meat). that also has to be juicy and cut very small. i do best with "vegetarian" types of foods. beans, tofu, soy products, cheeses, soups that have beans, tofu, etc. these foods make it easier to get in the required protein.
