I am 8 weeks out and have lost about 40 pounds. I too have not had any of the symptoms of ketosis. Hey, I don't care as long as this weight keeps coming off as I maintain my diet plan. Lap RNY 7/22/03

I was told by my surgeon's nurse that ketosis was going too far. They didn't want our bodies to get to that state.

I'm reading Dr. Atkins right now. He says not everyone has the bad breath, and even if they do, it only lasts for a short time.

I was in ketosis for the first 5 months post op and other than 'dry mouth', I never had a bad taste or bad breath. I did notice, however, that foods started to taste better to me between months 5-6 when I finally dropped out of ketosis for a while. If you want to check to see if you are actually in ketosis you can buy Ketostrips at target. Good luck with your weight loss.

I am almost 3 years out, and I don't remember any ketosis symptoms. My weight loss was fast and effortless. Ketosis was not stressed or emphasized by my surgeon. Heck, it wasn't even mentioned. That would mean I was on yet another diet...Shelley

Typically if your body is only minimally in ketosis you may very well not have any symptoms. Also many surgeon's post-op plans do not use ketosis. If your early post-op plan had you on liquids for quite a while and/or insisted you use protein drinks and get in at least 600 calories a day from the start, then that plan is pretty much devoid of ketosis. You might go in and out some but not stay there consistently or even throughout a day.
It's the plans that start you on food from like 1 week PO or before and do not use protein drinks that use ketosis to the maximum. If you are an RNY with a very small pouch, and on food only, you cannot eat enough food to stay out of starvation mode or get in enough protein to keep your body from attacking your protein stores. However, if you eliminate the carbs and force your body into ketosis then starvation mode does not enter into the picture. A plan like this has much less worries about your body attacking your protein stores as the process of ketosis uses the fat on your body for energy, not the protein. Therefore it is not critical to get to 60 grams of protein for quite a while.
My plan was a max ketosis and food only plan. For me I was very comfortable with it and it worked wonders for me. All of the post-op plans will produce excellent results. It just comes down to each doc's feelings on the various ways to go about it. Your weight loss is great so don't sweat whether you are or are not in ketosis and trust me you are not missing anything with the "what died in my mouth" feeling. I would wake up at 3:00 am and brush my teeth and tongue because it was so bad. Didn't help much but at least I tried. Fortunately I did not have the bad breath just the horrible taste in my mouth. It also did not affect food taste for me, except for water for the first month. Consider yourself lucky and keep up the hard work. You are doing great!

I use Keto stix about once per week to check for Ketosis. I have been in Ketosis every time I've checked. The bad taste in my mouth and the effect on my taste buds (where everything including water tasted NASTY) has gone away. I really only noticed it for first couple of months. Now I feel pretty normal other than the amount of food I can eat and some things that I used to love I can't stand now. Barb 4/07/03 5'2 235/157/126-130
