Question:
Does anyone know if surgery can be performed if someone has hepatitis C?

A DOCTOR IS CALLING THIS WEEK FOR MY 1ST CONSULTATION WITH HIM. I WAS WONDERING IF HAVING HEPATITIS C WILL STOP MY SURGERY?    — [Anonymous] (posted on July 10, 2001)

Well here is my thought. At one time they thought I had Hep C but turns out I only have the anti-bodies so I can relate somewhat! If your Hep C is in check and your liver is ok you should be fine. I had a live biopsy done when they were checking me out and mine is a-ok. I am having my gallbladder taken out with my surgery due to that if I didn't the drugs that they give to keep you from getting gallstones will more than likely hurt your liver. I don't want to take that chance with my liver after my scare with the Hep C. So if your liver is ok you need to decide what to do about your gallbladder if you still have it. Double check with your doctor about having it out or what he tells you about the drug to stop the gallstones. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions, let me know. I have Hep C also and although I am pending approval of insurance, I was told by my surgeon that as long as my liver function is good and my enzines are ok that he will preform surgery. I have stage 3 fibrosis also, so it dont matter the condition of your liver, for my surgeon it matter on your liver function. It has to be functioning good to be able to handle the surgery and the body change of RNY. GL to you

I am also going for a consult this week, and have Hep c. I am also concerned that I will be turned away from surgery. I have been trying to research the pro's and cons of having the surgery with Hep C and have found no information so far. I see my Gastroenterologist this week also. Hopefully if he will be supportive of the surgery. I think that will help. Hoping right along with you!!
