Question:
Can someone answer this question?

Hi, I have researched the library, but did not find an answer to this-Is RNY gastric bypass surgery an acceptable treatment for a hiatal hernia and severe acid reflux? I do not want to ask my doctor(for obvious reasons) until I get some feedback on this. Thanks in advance! Kelli    — kelli4wls (posted on March 18, 2006)

No, not really, I have barrette, the worst of the gerd, the fix was /is a hernia repair and a fundia wrap. the fundai wrap will take the fundus, top of the eesophagas to squeez it close when it contracts to push food downward. curd my gerd instantly. now they do this same day,,wow. so it on the health channel. the rny will reduce gerd somewhat due to weight loss, but may also agravate it, is not copatible with a wrap, thus I will have a DS, which as a wl can be done post wrap, but not pre wrap as the fundus is disponsed of. Dr Gagner is a authority on this, and he will advise u on email, Barretts is a very severe, very cancer prone level of Reflux.

Depending on who/how your RNY is done, many of us experience complete relief from these awful symptoms. Mine was over the day of surgery. Poof. End of misery.

My hiatal hernia was repaired and my GERD also is gone. My surgeon said that he could not guarantee that the GERD would be gone but he thought that at the least it would be greatly improved. I have been symptom free since the day of my surgery almost 3 years ago.

I had a "moderate to large" hiatal hernia, and terrible gerd. My distal RNY took care of it...never had any acid reflux or symptoms of the hernia again. Been six years now. Regards~

Obviously I think you want to research the Duodenal Switch as an option to the RNY. There are a number of surgeons who have experience with their patients being cured of the acid refulx. As Walter said -- Contact Dr Gagner http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.com/ He is the Chief, Bariatric Surgery at Cornell University. If he'd be willing to advise you by e-mail, you'd be wise to take his advice. Keep doing your research... make the best choice for you.

The RNY is a effective treatment for these troubles! For the original poster. You are trusting the surgeon with your life, so hopefully you will trust him with your questions.....

You probably have acid reflux because of the hernia. the bypass surgery is not a "fix" for the hernia, but the Dr. can repair the hernia while doing the RNY bypass surgery. My Dr. is going to repair my hernia during surgery. So you get 2 for the price of 1 (smile) Dawn C

While having RNY sugery may cure the symptoms you mention; RNY IS NOT the reason to have this surgery. This is a very very difficult and hard to recover from surgery (especially open and not lap like mine was in 2001) RNY is surgery to treat morbid obesity. Being obese to the point that it will KILL YOU. 100 lbs or more over your ideal weight for your height. IF that is your case, then you could consider RNY, otherwise, try alternative surgeries or treatments to cure your problems. While i am a vast supporter for RNY, there are easier ways to help your problems if you do not need this surgery. Hugs........ Kim
