Question:
Protein Bullets 42g protein; I heard they're not a good protein source??

I think I read somewhere that the type of protein in the these 42g protein bullets is not utilized well by the body, and so you're actually getting less than 42 grams of protein. Has anyone else heard this or have any info on these? Thanks!    — Gina S. (posted on July 15, 2008)

If I have my information correct, it is the processing of the protein that makes it largely unutilized by our systems. Also, your body really can't use up more than 30 gm of protein at a time, so pushing in 42 gm is a pretty much a waste.

I've never heard that. I've been using them for a couple months now without any trouble. I had my 3-month bloodtest a couple weeks ago and I got aces, so everything seems okay. God, I'd hate it if they're not good because they're the only ones I don't mind the taste of and they go down quick.

I have heard it's because your body cannot absorb the full 42 grams at one time. I used these in the beginning of my journey. I would take 1 oz. with breakfast, 1 oz. with lunch and 1 oz. with dinner and any extra before bed - so I spread the 42 grams throughout the day - in the beginning when I wasn't eating anything and still on liquids it allowed me to get my protein in - personally, I think it made the difference in my overall outcome. I would recommend them early on and spread out through the day. Worked for me. Haven't had a protein problem to date - 1 year and 5 months later - I am AOK.

I was told the body can not take 42 gram of protein at a time. They have some bullets with 25 gram of protein. That is what I drink. Annette

I've heard the same. The protein in the bullets is from collagen, which is not a pure form of protein. You want protein from whey.

I have never heard that. I use them all the time and have had great blood test results!

I too either buy the protein bullets with 25 gms protein or drink only half of the 42 gms bullets as your body cannot process and utilize more than about 25gms protein in one sitting. I hadn't heard about the whole collagen/whey thing though. For those who are lactose intolerant, they can't tolerate whey as it is a by- product of milk so.... soy protein is the way to go. It takes twice as long for your body to use the 42 grams but it doesn't go to wastre......I took them to my Dr.......Dr Adam Smith in Ft Worth and he researched them and the company.....it is now the only protein that he sells in his office to his patients.......He sells them for what he pays for them so it's not a money making thing.......so I don't think he would sell them if his research didn't pan out.......He feels it's the fastest easiest way to get your protein in if you have trouble getting enough each day....he does prefer we get most of out protein from solids however when you can't get them in this way. My nutritionist cringed when anyone mentioned bullets and more than 35ish grams of protein in a tiny gulp. Those things are designed for body builders who burn so much fuel that they actually can handle a large amount of protein at once...But it's not even proven that body builders even NEED that much protein to build muscle...Excess protein is sooo hard on your organs because it is not stored in the body...It takes a long time for the body to break down protein and turn it into waste...We are better off eating several small protein meals/snack daily so that the body can process the majority of the protein we eat at that time...rather than have wasted protein which is not stored in the body to be utilized later like other nutrients...Eat healthy...eat real whole foods and this WLS journey can be a beautiful thing. Also Soy is not a "complete" protein...Soy isolate is! There is a difference! Not all protein is created equal! Meat (fish and poltry is the BEST lean protein there is!) Plain and simple.

I have used them at times. I get most of my protien from food. I supliment on days I can not eat so much. Or days I am out and don't eat as good as I should. When I do have them I mix it with a bottle of water(it taste better to me) and it takes me all day to drink.

The ones I used are called New Whey. Here is what their web site says about their protein quality - New Whey Liquid Protein is made up of three proteins to achieve a patent-pending formula that is both highly bioavailable and complete. It is crucial that protein supplements are complete proteins, meaning it contains the appropriate amounts of all essential amino acids. Incomplete proteins are not capable of benefiting muscle growth. To achieve this high level of quality, all three protein sources in New Whey are enzymatically hydrolyzed or cut into peptides making the combination of proteins complete and more "bioavailable" than other any protein powder, bar or liquid on the market. ================================== I thought they were very convenient. If you're filling up quickly and can't take in a lot of liquid or solid, then it's a good way to make sure you get in your required protein per day. I found this article which says that the 30g limit of absorbsion is basically a myth (i.e. that you only use a portion of any protein you consume): http://ezinearticles.com/?How-Much-Protein-Can-You-Absorb-At-One-Time?&id=721734 They can be expensive, but shop around. Here is a place I found 12 vials for $26, which is pretty good. http://www.physicaladdictions.com/IDS-New-Whey-42gm-IDS101-P1191.aspx The containers are really bulletproof - you can put them in your purse, and then when you want to take it, open it up and pour it over ice and then dilute it with a bit of water - it will taste more like Crystal Light or Isopure then. Good luck!

Go to google and type in " maximum amount of protein the body can absorb in one meal". I have just done an extensive study on this myself and it appears that 50-60 gms of protein can be utililized by our bodies in one sitting. However, you should wait approximately 3 hours between protein intake meals. Our bodies are powerful tools and they can use the protein to build and supply muscle and give us energy along with the best advantage of protein... to make our pouch feel full! Research it at various sites and compare notes to get an "average". Congrats on your new lifestyle!
