Question:
1 year out - do you still weigh or measure your food/how much do you eat at a meal?

I asked this on the forum under surgery dates but that does not seem to be an active area. I would like to see what others are doing in this area. Do you still weigh your food before meals, and how much are you able to eat at each meal? At my 1 year check I asked my doc how much I should be eating per meal and he said 4 ounces. I am just wondering how many of you still weigh your food or do you pretty much know how much to eat and how much do you eat at a meal if you do weigh it out? Thanks    — Dawn A. I am 15 months out and I don't weigh my food. I still try to think protein first so I typically can eat a whole chicken breast and a few vegies. But if I go out to eat I can usually only eat about 1/3 of whats on the plate. I feel I eat somewhat normally now. Now I pretty much know how much I can eat. Hope this helps...

I agree with Melissa. I am 14 mos out and can pretty much eyeball the size, erroring on the small side. I do still measure when packing lunch for work.

Hey Dawn, Even though I am just 7 months post-op, I do journalize my food and occasionally use a measuring cup, but I can generally know what size is right for me. I normally eat 1/2 Arnold's wheat sandwich thin in the morning with an egg on it, lowfat cheese and either bacon or canadian bacon. And every day at dinner, I have a lean meat, a healthy carb, and veggies for dinner. I think we all worry about every little bite we put in our mouth and if it's too little or too much. You can probably answer that question by how much weight is coming off or how much weight you are maintaining if you are in maintenance stage. Good luck sweetie!

I am 17 months out now (hard to believe!) and find that I need to weigh and measure about once a week to keep me honest - it is so easy to "overestimate" and I have read that it is pretty normal and that you should weigh and measure your foods at least once a week to remind yourself of portion sizes. Also, my surgeon told me I should NEVER eat more than a cup of food at a meal and then only have 3 meals a day. Well, there is no way I can do that and not graze - too long between meals, especially when I have my breakfast at 5 a.m.! So, I have my breakfast shake in the morning, then I have about 1/2 cup of food at mid morning and mid afternoon for snacks (usually yogurt or cottage cheese - good protein and calcium sources!), and then have no more than a cup of food at noon and dinner. I try and keep my calories between 1000 and 1200 - less than that and I don't lose. Hope this helps. Wendy

Hello, I am 5 years post op and have found that when I don't measure and keep track of my food, I gain weight. I have put on 27 lb. since reaching my goal weight and have started again journaling and measuring my food. I have to keep myself in check. Janet

I am 10 and a half months out and yes, I still weigh my food out and log every bite I take. You'd be surprised how fast the calories pile up, and when my weight loss slows down or stops, I can pretty much tell I've been eating more calories than I should.

Hi ! I have journaled and measured my food from day 1. If I go on vacation, or out, of course I do not, but I can eyeball it pretty good, or just eat to the "full" feeling . However, I measure my food because I am trying to keep my pouch as small as possible for as long as possible. I had my surgery a lil more than 20 months ago, I met goal at 9.5 months and have maintained a 120 lb loss since. I eat 4 ounces per meal 4 times a day with a snack in there somewhere. I was told to eat 2 ounces until goal was met. i consume between 1300 and 1500 calories a day depending on if I workout that day or not. Bestof luck to you! Hugs, n God Bless, Kim
