Question:
What should I be eating

I had my lap band Oct 24, 2007. I had my first fill the first of January and I have only lost 25 pounds. I am very discouraged because I can't eat much of a variety or I throw up, so give me some pointers as to what I am doing wrong and what should I eat. I am going back in March to refill and I dread it because it was uncomfortable and I could barely swallow my medication and spent a lot of time throwing up that clear bubbly stuff...yuk. Please give me pointers, need help. susie    — susiestone924 (posted on February 18, 2008)

I am not a lap-band patient, but I do have quite a bit of experience with throwing up. I have a sylatic band and fobi pouch. First, try drinking something warm before you eat. Don't try anything new unless you're at home and can get to the bathroom quickly. I believe the bubbly stuff is a sign that something is stuck. Try chewing at least 40 times each bite. Eat what your new tool likes and can handle. Your tool may be signaling that you're overduing it. Maybe you can try protein shakes for a while. Are you eating high fat, high calories crunchies to avoid throwing up? This may be a reason why you are losing weight slowly. Be patient with yourself, it all takes some getting used to.

Hi Susie I had the Lap-Band 8/23/07 and have had 4 fills and am due for my next fill on the 27th. There are a lot of foods that Lap-Band seems to have troubles with: Bread, Chicken, Chips, anything that is soft and can ball-up will cause problems. I was told there needs to be 1/2 hour between liquids and solids and no liquids for an hour after eating, other wise it will have adverse effects. You do need to chew-chew-chew alot, I had a lot of issuses with this at first. But once you get the hang of it the lap-band is a great tool, I have lost 90 pounds post surgury, not always easy, but very managable! Good Luck and keep up the hard work - Peace Steve

I'm confused as to why you are getting another fill when you are already having problems swallowing. This cycle of restriction and more vomiting can lead to HUGE problems for you. How are you gauging how much to eat? It should NOT be until you feel full or until you feel the band restrict you. IT should be several ounces (by volume, not weight) of veggies and a few ounces of protein. NO liquids for 1-2 hours after eating (this part is really hard for me). So perhaps you are over-eating? When you talk about variety, what can and can't you eat? As for the slow progress, I absolutely hear you. I've only lost 18 pounds, and I thought it would just start sliding off but it hasn't, so it is very hard to be patient. Just in my case, I know I have a long way to go regarding eating healthier. I don't want to be on a diet...at least that is my mindset, so I have the constant battle all in my head. It's not really a diet, it's healthy eating, but it's a mind game. I hope you can figure this out and please talk to your doctor about it because you don't want to go down the road of complications. Best wishes to you!

bubbly slimy means something is stuck & your body is making slime to "unstick" it. If that is currently happening then you might want to rethink getting a fill. Difficulty with pills going down, sliming and throwing up are signs you are currently tight enough or you are not following the rules: For now make sure you are 1) taking small bites; about pencil eraser or pea size. 2)Chewing very well, to mush (no lumps left) before swallowing 3) do not eat dry foods like overcooked chicken 4) Do not drink fluids while eating, this can try to push food through & cause pain 5) Stay away from things that glob together, some pastas, breads, chips etc. Signs it's time for a fill: eating more than past few weeks, not getting the "full;hick-up signal", no weight loss for 2 weeks or longer, eating sooner than 4 hours because you are hungry again.

Hi, > Don't get discouraged. My first weigh-in I lost 17 Lbs. It takes a while to adjust. 25 Lbs is very good. Some pointers is chew very good when eating, do not drink while eating, when you feel full or feel as if the food is going to stay in your throat stop eating. Watch what types of foods you are eating see if you are able to digest them good. I can not digest meats, breads and raw fruits very well. My doctor inform me that these foods should be eaten in small pieces and chewed very good but for some reason they seem to settle in my throat and I have to throw them up. What foods do you eat? Cooked vegatables, fish work good for me, oatmeal works good for breakfast. Be patient. I had my Lap Band Surgery 7/10/2007 and I have lost 44 pounds. I understand that this is a slow process but it will be worth it in the end. (smile) Diane
