Question:
Alcohol at 3 months?

I am going to Hollywood this weekend for my boyfriend's band's show, and I know for a fact that everyone will be drinking at the hotel and at the club he is playing at. I know that alcohol effects us post-ops more severely but will it kill me to have a glass of vodka mixed with sugar free ocean spray cranberry juice? i won't be driving so I am not worried about the level of intoxication, I just want to make sure it won't harm me internally. My doctor didn't give me an actual date when ti would be ok to have a drink.    — Mig (posted on August 20, 2007)

You should be fine. I am 3 1/2 years postop and I can have 2 glasses of White Zinfandel and I am flying higher than a kite. It is true it takes less for us postops to get a buzz. Go with it and have fun!! Just dont make a habit of it......lol Best Wishes, Mickey

My doc says at least a year post-op before alcohol. Alcohol can cause ulcers; I wouldn't want to take the chance. How about a glass of diet cranberry juice with a squeeze of lime juice and pretend; no one with be the wiser and you'll be safer.

I've done the pretending thing at family parties and it is ok I guess, but I am going to be around a lot of people I don't know and I want to be able to be relaxed and not be on edge. But thank you for your input.

Well..I am not much of a drinker, but not against having fun either. Doctors will all have varying times they think it would be safe to drink alcohol. I know alcohol can cause ulcers (but i don't know if i would classify 1 drink as..."OMG your gonna get an ulcer" Is there a chance you can call your docs office & speak to the nurse and ask? Of course we all know alcohol hits us post-ops harder, so i would say don't over do it. But just something to think about...How will it effect your system? What i mean is..have you ever ate something and had to rush straight to the bathroom for relief? LOL; maybe a trial @ home first might be in order, then you can see how it will effect you getting buzzed and feeling wise & still be in your comfort zone. I would say personally if your drinking crandberry juice w/ a shot of vodka...that might be better than a glass of vodka w/ just a shot of crandberry..know what i mean. The 1st replier stated to glasses of wine has her flying high, well just remember straight vodka might have you hittin the floor~also if it seems like it might be too harsh for your pouch / try chasing w/ water...I had a friend who drank some tequilla 4 mos. post and it burned her terribly when she drank it;she actually felt it burning in her stomach, but it did not do any internal long term damage to her hope my answer helped ~Tiffany

Because alcohol is processed differently after rny, please, don't try to have too much. I am in a very bad place after rny when I thought alcohol could not hurt.

My doc allows alcohol after 6 weeks. He warned to drink them weak and because we are prone to ulcers not to often. Throw in a little protein with it and I do not know why you could not have a 'slow' drink. Christine

My doctor said to go ahead and have wine. He told me this at around 2 months post op. I haven't tried any yet, but I used to enjoy going out and drinking so I know that I will eventually relax and have wine once in awhile...I totally understand that this is a special occassion and you just want to be/feel "normal". I would try a drink at home a few nights before hand and see how you react to the alcohol. Take small sips. I look at it this way...as long as we don't have the shots lined up at the bar and we don't drink all the time, we should be fine! Enjoy.

Thank you everyone, this has put my mind at ease. I think I will try having a small drink before I go to see what I can tolerate, I don't plan on having to much, probably just a shot of vodka with the juice. Before surgery I could drink a lot and be coherent still. I don't want to pass out so I will play it safe. Thanks again!!

Trying a drink or two at home maybe a good idea. Iam getting towards the 2 year mark and a Bacardi Silver effects my balance and makes me really tired. If you try it at home there will be fewer wittneses lol. Plus if it makes you sick you sure don't want to spend the night wishing death in a public toilet! Good luck and have one for me LOL

I was told to wait at least 10 weeks and then try it at home because it will not take much to be flat out on the floor. I am currently 3 months and have not tried it. best of luck.

my cousin is 6yrs out and she gets HAMMERED on a couple of vodka and tonics when we go out...even on 2 glasses of wine! She is funny so no problem...if you tend to be a mean and nasty drunk...stick to plain mixers! You could end up hurting a lot of people a lot sooner than normally! LOL

i have to agree with the other posters -- try it at home first just in case -- but know your new limits -- i had 3 large pina colada's at a bbq

I tried one last night. Had a little less then a full shot of vodka and mixed it with some Minute Made Light Lemonade. It made me tipsy but not to the point where I would do something stupid. I think a shot will do me just fine in Hollywood. Thank you everyone.
