Question:
Clothing sizes

I don't know about you guys, but I wore a size 16 for 170-200 pounds. Is it normal that a size is equal to 30+ pounds? I am now down to 207 from 237 and my 18's are loose, but i am wondering if anyone else is having size issues. There are so many people that have shot down to like a 6 or something. I don't think i will be a six even at 120 pounds! Give me some feedback on your size progression please. Thanks!!    — kittyluver77 (posted on May 11, 2007)

I wore a size 18 from about 215-236 pounds and as you know it depends really on who the maker of the clothes are. For instance now I wear a size 12; after 3-months Post Op, down from 236; however some 12 fit loosely and the others feel just right. The size 16 is probably a good fit; but if not try wearing the best size for your comfort. My last weigh in almost two weeks ago was 187.

Size most be different for everyone. I am down to 158 and I wear size 12's. I alway thought in the 150's would be a smaller size. Maybe different brands and body types.

Different body shapes/sizes = different clothes sizes. When you were between 170 & 200 were you fit. If you have been exercising, you probably have more lean muscle that takes us less room. Pound for pound fat and muscle weigh the same, it is just that muscle takes us less space. I have usually equated 20# being equal to a pants' size. I guess it can depend upon the exercises that you are doing as well.

Hi, Stacey! Maddening, isn't it? It can depend on many variables, your height, muscle mass, the maker of the clothes. When I was big, I could wear the same items for 50-60 pounds. Now, it seems every 5 pounds is a size. I am 5'3". I remained a size 14 from 195 pounds to 160. I was sure I had stabalized, because I was at that point for many months. Suddenly, when I hit 155, I got into size 12 on the top. I am pear-shaped, so I still often wear a 14 on the bottom. To further add to the mystery, my weight has been stable for 2-3 months. Yet, my top size continues to shrink. I recently got into a size 10, and all the bras I bought last month are too big. It can make you insane! At my highest, my bra size was 54C, now it is a 36B. My shoes went down 2 sizes and my wedding ring when from a size 8 to a size 4. All this happened with a 244 pound loss, It is unpredictable. Remember, nobody sees the size tags. Don't let this little variable make you anxious! I used eBay as a way to manage all the changing sizes. I was able to get clothes inexpensively, wear them for a short time and not brake the bank. Be proud of your success. There are no set rules, so enjoy the ride. I never thought I would be able to shop in a normal store, so I just count my blessings. I actually weigh less now than I did in the 6th grade!!! I am sure you look beautiful, and you sound like you are on track to me. I would love to hear about your journey more. Hang in there, Stacey, you're doing great! Fond regards,

Greatly depends on the maker of the clothing. More expensive brands tend to run bigger. I also think that they have pushed sizes bigger. When I was high school/college, they didn't have size 0 or 00. And there were little girls - I think they wore a 2 or 4. I don't remember wearing anything smaller than a 12 - in fact I almost remember going from a girls size 14/16 into 12 or 14. That's probably not accurate - I just probably don't remember or wasn't paying attention. Anyway, I'm 165 now and have size 12 (Coldwater Creek) pants that are too big and size small tops. At Kohls, I wear medium or large tops and probably size 12 pants (the smallest size I have is 14 and 16 and I've got them pinned. But some cheaper brands, I can even wear a size 16.

Everyone is different as are the sizes for different manufacturers. However I am 135 and wear a size 6-7. Never thought I would since I started out 1 year ago at a size 24. Donna 286/135

Stacey, your height is a big factor too. I am 5'11" and at 145 pounds I was a size 0-2. At 180 pounds I am only an 8-10. The larger the sizes, the more weight you will have to loose to change sizes, but the smaller the sizes the closer they are together in size. What I mean is, when you are 14+ size you can easily loose 20-40 pounds without changing sizes. But when you are a size 6 you can loose five pounds and have to go to a size 4. I only know this from experience and it is GREAT!!! This is an awesome problem to have. Good luck, Jennifer

First and foremost....remember - everyone is different. Your body is losing weight and inches at the rate that your body is comfortable with. Rome wasn't built in a day - and your weight loss won't happen that way either. Don't get caught up in numbers - they are just numbers. What matters most is you are happier, healthier and above all losing at your pace, not someone else's. To answer your question - I started at 262 in a size 22 (have been as large as a 26). I almost immediately went to a size 18 around 247ish. This morning I am 213 and in a size 14/16 depending. I still have 18's I wear too, as they are cut smaller. My most obvious weight loss has been in my upper body - I went from an 18/20 to a 14/16 to an XL to a L and now... I am in wearing jr. XL's. I know, huh.... crazy? Just keep plugging along...things will happen for you. I don't think I've ever met anyone who shot down to a 6 overnight. I am 5'8" with a small/medium body structure - they say I should get down to 155-160 - but with my height and body structure - I look sick. My goal is 175-180. Don't let someone play a numbers game on you....take it one day at a time and let the tool work for you. Best wishes!!

Stacey, I satrted as a size 18 weighing about 197lbs. I had my surgery two months ago and weigh about 145lbs. and wearing a size 10 right now. I think every body is different, and many people carry their weight differently.

The clothing industry has changed their standards for sizes. It is one of those "feel good" things. They have changed the size 10's to fit the person's that are really a size 12 or 14 (depending on brand), etc. Just fill in the blanks for the sizes. It is to get people (especially women) to purchase more clothing and feel better about themselves. It is deceitful in my opinion. Chris

Years ago when I was 115-120lbs I wore a 4 or 6. Now Im 223lbs and Im wearing a size 18. I think it has to do with your height and the clothes you are buying. Some shirts I can wear a XL and some I have to get 1X.
