Question:
MY LEFT UPPER QUADRANT HAS HAD THIS PAIN THAT FEELS LIKE A KNIFE STABBING

MY LEFT UPPER QUADRANT FEELS LIKE A BUTCHER KNIFE IS STABBING ME BUT IT IS NOT CONTINUOUS. IT COMES AND GOES AND IT MAKES ME DOUBLE OVER. I HAVE TALKED TO MY OBGNY ABOUT THIS AND HE SAYS IT'S PROBABLY LIGAMENTS STRECHING SINCE I'M 8 MONTHS PREGNANT. BUT IT'S SOOOO CENTRALIZED AND I'M 9 MONTHS POST OP OPEN RNY. I KNOW I HAVE TWO HERNIA'S (VENTRAL). BUT THIS PAIN IS UNDESCRIBABLE WHEN IT HAPPENS. ANY SUGGESTIONS????? JOY    — JOY C. (posted on May 8, 2003)

I had this pain when my muscles were growing back after surgery. The only thing that helped was holding a heating pad on it and taking pain pills.

Joy...if you're eating when you have this pain it might just be air. I get a sharp one until I burp or it goes down. Your gallbladder is on the right side. Also, it could just be related to the pregnancy. Hope you get to feeling better! =)

When I had this type pain it turned out to be my gall bladder.

If you are 9 months post op and 8 months pregnant, you actually got pregnant 1 month after surgery? I thought that was supposed to be highly dangerous. I had a friend that got pregnant (was date raped) and she had to have an abortion, because they told her she shouldn't get pregnant within the first year. I am suprised your doctor didn't have concerns. I don't know much about this and don't intend on getting pregnant, but I would think it would be highly risky due to the fact that you lose alot of nutritional absorbtion within the body.

Please go to the ob/gyn or the ER and have them check for HELLP Syndrome. Your symptoms sound like it could be HELLP. I had the same kind of pain and also nausea and had to have an emergency c-section. If there is elevated protein in your urine and high blood pressure, it might be HELLP. HELLP is often misdiagnosed and can be very dangerous. If I hadn't gone to the ER when I had, I really would have been in trouble. I don't want to scare you, but please just go to get it ruled out.
