Question:
Why am I belching?

I had gastric bypass about 10 months ago. In the last few weeks I have started belching non-stop. And it is not normal belching, it is very forceful belching that occurs every several minutes all day long. It even wakes me up from a very sound sleep. Why? Any help would be appreciated.    — kittymama03 (posted on July 27, 2011)

Ohhhh boy....is it ever loud.....hahahaha I have a monster inside me...the sounds that come out of my body are nothing short of hysterically embarasingly shocking.....to put it mildly....after having RNY your body has trapped gas and it has to come out unfortunate.y it doesnt all come out at once...not right away anyway....other thing is that depending on the foods that your body is allowing you to eat some if not all will cause gas and when that gas is trapped waiting to come out and moving in there IT IS LOUD!!! then when it does come out...its even LOUDER!!!! SHOCKINGLY LOUDER!!!! wether you burp it out or fart it out....(smell as all hell....rat died in there kind of smell....)hahaha your not alone we all have gone will go and do go through it....there is nothing you really can do about it, I mean you can try to take gas-x but its going to happen anyway....there is a small pill you can order on line that will cleans the odor but you will still have the gas....learn to have fun and remember the worst you have gone through now its time to learn to live a new life with a totatlly new body and a loud one at that....Ps once all the excess gas leaves it wont happen as often

Hi! Yes, I too agree with the previous poster's answer. If you are now 10-mos. post-op you are likely introducing more and more "normal" or typical foods and they are likely causing your body to re-adjust and are causing the overload of gas (and/or belching). This is not abnormal as everyone reintroduces foods back into their diets at different rates. I am also fairly certain that your lying down and relaxing is causing the belching to occur at night--as pressure is relieved. Don't know if you are a stomach or back sleeper, but you might want to try lying on your left side to relieve gas pressure/symptoms. Also, if your surgeon hasn't recommended adding Prilosec or Prevacid as a short-term med to help with this sudden increase in gas you might want to speak to the staff RN or CRNP about this as a possibility?! I'm not a doctor, of course, but I am 2-years out and have lost 130#. Despite all the 1st year roller coaster issues, I would NEVER change a thing. Best of luck to you on your continued journey and endeavors to a new life.
