Question:
Having a hard time adjusting to solids

I started back on solids this week (8 weeks pots-op RNY) and am having a really hard time adjusting. Is it normal to only get about 2 bites in before you're so full you can't eat?    — airbear762000 (posted on February 22, 2007)

It's hard to get food in, I am just about the same time as you, and it is difficult to eat sometimes. Just remember small bites and eat often, that way you can get your proteins in. It will get better

I'm 5 months post-op and I remember that as being normal. As time goes by you will be able to eat more. Don't forget your protein shakes and vitamins!!! Good luck!!!!!

DON'T worry!!! You'll be able to cosume food again soon enough~Be thankful that you can't so that you can use this time to lose more....I'm almost 7months post-op and have lost 110lbs. and holding at the moment. Now I can eat anything without a reaction, which isn't great! I find myself really having to make a conscious effort NOT to get back into the old habits that got me obese in the first place! Use this time to learn...and do be sure to have your protein shakes and vitamins daily! Congratulations! Trish

Aaryn, it is not at all unusual to just be able to eat a few bites. Take your time and don't be anxious. Be sure you keep your fluids and your vitamins up, these are so important. I drank a lot of milk to be sure I got my protein in, but do what you can to assure your protein is getting in. Your body needs this to recover and protect your organs, but what you are going through is not unusual. I would also encourage you, since you can only take a few bites to eat those few bites 4 to 6 times a day until you can take a little more. The pouch will stretch, it does this naturally (and sometimes with too much help from us, so be careful). The thing is, you have control. When you get the head hunger, or the lust to eat more than you should, have some things in place to prepare youself for that struggle. I know you probably think that that is not going to be a struggle for you yet, but your two bites now will turn to much more as time goes on. Enjoy that honeymoon period now of no desire to eat, and feeling way too full too soon, keep up the basics of water, exercise and protein, and keep an eye out for the changes. Pretty soon you will feel guilty for taking 10 bites of food and think you are gaining weight. It is a tough ride, full of head games, but if you prepare youself and do what your surgeon says, you have a good chance of success. I wish you well. Patricia P
