Question:
What will happen if I have a glass of wine on a date?

Had gastric bypass July 22; losing weight "on track"; exercising everyday (treadmill 40 mins - shooting for 2 miles each time); now I have a really important first date with a guy who wants to "wine & dine" me with steak & "a bottle of the best". I am normally a very lite drinker. What will happen if I have a glass of wine with dinner? If so, what would be best? I only intend to sip? What will happen if I order a small steak, and chew-chew-chew? I have stayed away from beef to this point. I don't want to get sick or drunk! Help!    — summerbabies77 (posted on September 7, 2009)

probably NOTHING will happen but i suggest NEVER consuming alcohol on the first date with a guy. order some perrier. you don't want to reveal too much information or be too open with a guy on a first date... well, that is if you're hoping for a second date.

I have a glass of wine @ just over 2 mons. out. I felt I was playing with fire, because I know I wasn't supposed to. But nothing happened except that I got a bit tipsy faster than usual. I don't think that it's a good idea to drink for the first time after your surgery when you are on a first date with a guy. It's better to be safe at home until you see how it will affect you. Also, I would NOT make drinking a habit. I only drink about once every six months. As with all things, just use common sense and remember the word "moderation." Be careful and have fun! Good luck!

I drank a beer once and got drunk. It was like I had a six pack. It didn't last long tho. I never was much of a drinker anyway so I haven't done it again. Anyway! You shouldn't drink with your meal! *Smile*

HI The other thing is that you also dont want to try a new food while you are out...You are not sure how your body will react to it...some people dont tolerate the same foods pre & post...the last thing u want is to get sick in front of somebody...re the alcohol...you will absorb it much quicker and feel drunk quicker then it will pass quicker...however, wine has sugar...the only thing i ever dumped on was juice...so the wine may cause u to dump...another 1st date no-no.

The wine will most likely really not do anything, esp. if you eat along with it. The steak could be a different story. I am almost seven months from my RNY bypass and still cannot usually eat steak and know that it will be OK. Many times I try and I get sick no matter how much I chew. Make sure you do just sip the wine as your alcohol tolerenace will be much lower and it comes on you pretty much all at once, upside is it doesn't last long.

You'll get drunk or at least very light headed. wine will affect you totally different now. I get drunk from a dose of NyQuil. So be careful. Also, I wouldn't recommend steak this early out from surgery. Perhaps you can order something that isn't as dry as steak. But if you do order steak, get a petite filet migon. They are very tender and don't require much work. You can sip, but be sure to wait a few minutes in between bites, and sips. Best wish and have fun on your date. Just so you know, people that are months out from surgery aren't ready for meat yet. So if you can don't eat it. Or you will spend the evening in the restroom tying to dis-lodge the stuck steak in the opening of the stomach. If this does happen you will spend a little time babying your pouch. Just an FYI.

As far as the steak goes, filet is the only meat that I can eat that doesn't hurt (no hamburgers, no chicken, no turkey, no fish). I go for all natural filet (organic) and have it med rare to make sure it is very juicy. I would try it at home first to make sure you can eat it... I can only eat 3 bites of it. I can't help with the wine, I personally don't feel as if I am ready for that yet. But I would agree with the others that you should try at home first. Think about it this way the last think you want to do is get completely drunk, stupid drunk, and dump on the sugar while having a bad reaction to the steak. Try a couple sips of wine, and make yourself a steak see how it goes, you will only be able to have tiny amounts of both. Best of luck to you!!

Any alcohol will be absorbed more and a lot faster then it used to be. One glass of wine or one beer is my limit. I promise you will feel the effects of the alcohol before your half way through with the glass. As for the steak, it has been 3 yrs since my surgery and I am limited to a couple of bites of steak or I am in sever pain. I remember going out for a steak to celebrate graduating top of my EMT class with a fellow student and having to excuse myself and go into the bathroom and "get rid of it" after 5 bites. This was about 6 months after surgery so I have a bite or two of by boyfriends and stick with fish or chicken on my plate. Good luck on your date, hope it all goes well.
