Question:
Pre-surgery liquid diet help

I start my 2 week pre-surgery (lapro-RNY)liquid this Thurs. (2/12). Any suggestions on "liquids" that are good and can help make this easier? Thanks.    — troggdog73 (posted on February 7, 2009)

I like the protein bullets (especially the fruit punch) added to a bottle of water and some crystal light mix. I slightly freeze it so it's sluchy and it's pretty good. A lot like frozen koolaid with a punch (sorry about the pun). God Bless and I'll be praying for a fast, healthy recovery for you upcoming surgery. (my rny 11/21/08 and down 50#...yea!!)

The liquid diet is very hard to get through. I am doing it right now. Had LB surgery 2/4/09. SF popsicles helped a lot but what really helped me was going to or.live a website that shows the surgery that you are going to have. It gives a greater understanding of why we must hang in there and follow the doctors orders. It makes the surgery easier and keep in mind you will be able to eat again. I'm on clear liquids now but I am actually looking forward to jello and protein shakes. It's not easy so I try to keep busy and ignore those TV commericials full of food. Good Luck to you and I hope I helped a little.

Protidiet saved me, you just mix with water and they taste great, esp. the Kiwi Melon, they are 15 grams of protein and I lived on them for about 3 weeks, in fact I still drink a few a week.I got those from my doctors office, there are many flavors. I also had SF popsicles.

During my pre-op, I was allowed low-fat creamed soups, and that really helped me get through it. Tomato soup was a daily staple. I also really liked the Dannon Light & Fit Strawberries and Cream smoothies. SF popsicles are still part of my daily diet. Wendi Lapband 1/19, 25 lbs lost

The primary protien drink I used was Carnation Instant Breakfast. Pre-op I could have either Regular or No Sugar added. Either taste fine. I bought the packets and added it to 8oz of 1% milk (you could use skim)... It has many vitamins and protien which I think helped me a ton. I liked chocolate flavor best.

My liquid diet was clear liquids. So I drank lots of chicken broth, ate s/f jello, drank herbal tea with splenda, clear protein drinks and I really like Aquafina berry flavored water. I still drink it all the time and carry a bottle in my purse always.

I am currently doing the 2 week pre-surgery liquid diet, my surgery is scheduled for 2/19/09 (lapband). I bought the vanilla protein powder to make my protein drinks. I make my protein smoothies with fruit. I change the fruit for each smoothie. Try mixed berries, banana, pineapple, peaches, and so on. I don't use chocolate because that is my addiction. I gave up chocolate for the new year and will try not to have any until I reach my goal. I, also, found a really good crystal lite favor white grape. I hope this helps you and good luck.

I used protidiet as well. I also drank V8 juice just because I missed the vegetables during that time. I tried to stay with the low sodium. EAS is good also, get the carb control kind. I also bought bisque soups to get me thru the pre and post op phases.

I hated the 2 week liquid diet....but I am so glad my doctor put me on it. I lost some weight and I really think it has helped with adjusting to new food. I had RNY on Jan. 20th, so I am still adjusting, but after slim fast for two weeks, plain cream of wheat and scrambled eggs never tasted so good! LOL and if you can conquer the liquid diet pre op, remember, you can do anything, Best of luck!

I haven't had surgery yet, but if you can have shakes, I've got a GREAT recipe. I used to have this every morning: Mix this up in a blender: 1 cup lowfat milk 3 ice cubes 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I recommend Body Fortress Whey Protein - they sell it at most stores) 1 cup frozen fruit (any combo of strawberry, raspberry, banana, peaches, pineapple 1 packet of stevia or equal (optional, if you like it sweeter) I also add 1 TB flaxseed oil and 1 TB coconut, but it's optional (though the oil may help you feel fuller plus it's loaded with Omega 3s) I swear it tastes like a real ice cream shake!

I started my liquid diet today. Luckily, I only have to do it for one week. I am drinking the SF Carnation Instant Breakfast. I have choc. and vanilla. I like them both. I also am drinking broth. I do have a headache from not eating but I'll be ok. I can hardly wait until the 17th so I can finally begin a new life.
