Question:
Gall bladder removal

I spent my swingin' fourth in the hospital after being rushed by ambulance to the hosipital Thrusday Morning! I don't remember ever knowing such pain, even in child birth! I had to have an emergency gall bladder removal! What fun! Anyone had this and can recommend what I should eat or what to avoid? Looks like I'm going to be down a couple weeks again! Just when I thought it was safe to go outside! Dang it! Thanks Friends! Lesleigh In Ga!    — lesleigh07 (posted on July 5, 2008)

17 years ago I had 4 GB attacks, 1 every two weeks, while I was in my first trimester with my first child. Had my GB out at 20 weeks gestation. Great fun. Know the pain. Eating, nothing really different then normal RNY fare. Low fat or fat free. Good luck! Laura

I had my gallbladder out last August - before my VSG in May. I didn't really have to do anything special with diet. Although I was careful about fat intake. You can't break down the fats as well right after gallbladder removal. But you will be fine shortly! Sorry it was an emergency because I know it's painful. Good luck and I wish you a very speedy recovery!

You should be back to your old self in no time!! I had my gallbladder out 11 years ago and I still to this day have to be careful with my first meal of the day. If it has any fat or oils at all it goes right through me. Our bodies do not break it down like before. Other than that everything is normal. My recovery time was about 2 weeks.

When did you have your WLS? I had mine March 12, 2008. Have been taking some kind of medicine the doctor gave me to prevent gall stones from forming ... so hopefully I would not need my gall bladder out. Said for me to take this medicine for 6 months. What were your symptoms???

About 10 % of WLS patients loss their gail blatter. I had it skip me. Glad you are felling better. Have the hospital nutrionest talk to you about foods to eat with both sergerys under your belt so to speak.

I can sympathize with you. The pain was so unbearable to me that it made me pass out. I even had natural child birth which didn't compare to the gall bladder pain! I had my gall bladder out in 1989 and had gastric bypass March 2008. I have never "dumped" with gastric bypass although after I had the gall bladder out in the 80's, fatty foods would affect me similarly to how dumping is described. I'd avoid anything too fatty. Also I had a problem with raw onions.

I had WLS July 27, 2007 and had my gallbladder removed March 8, 2008. I had pain on the right side, right under my rib cage, after eating. It was unbearable. Of course I spent one week in the hospital for this because I am on blood thinners from having had blood clots and they had to reverse the blood thinners and stop them to do the surgery and then had to start the blood thinners after surgery and get my blood levels back under control. It took one week exactly. I'm glad that is over with. I figure there aren't many organs left for me to contend with here...LOL Two weeks after the gallbladder removal I suffered from Bell's palsy and was admitted overnight to make sure it wasn't a stroke. I had a CAT scan and MRI and another echo done of my heart. So I've had just about every test (blood and otherwise) done in the last year and everything checks out. Hopefully I stay healthy at this point. It did seem like the gallbladder surgery was tougher to recover from than the WLS, which makes no sense to me!!! I had open RNY, but had lap cholecystectomy...go figure!

I know someone whose irritable bowel cleared up after their gall bladder was removed - gall bladder going bad can mess up your system. Had mine out at the same time as RNY, unfortunately, four months out, my irritable bowel is a little worse. I can't eat much fat, eat even a liitle too much and I'm running for the bathroom later, or maybe the next morning, complicates getting to work on time. Still glad I had the procedures, I'm losing weight and getting healthier, just have to be more careful about what I eat. btw, the diarrhea was really bad the first few weeks, but it does improve as your system adjusts.

It seems common after RNY...All the calcium and protein we have to take doesn't help...But calcium carbonate is famous for causing gallstones(Which is another reason for taking calcium citrate)...It binds to everything and reeks havoc on your gallbladder which you don't have now...Good! Sorry you have a bad 4th! Hope you feel better soon! Hugs
