Question:
liquid diet recipes and/or suggestions for protein drinks

I'm having surgery next Tues, 3/11/08, and I want to go ahead and prepare some of the liquid "meals" and stock up on protein shakes, vitamins, etc. Does anyone have any recipes or suggestions? Any advice is much appreciated!    — Julie S. (posted on March 4, 2008)

I'd go with whatever your surgeon suggests. Normally the surgeon's have a protocol on what liquids they would prefer you have for the first week or two. Vitamin-wise there are several options. I did research and I found liquid vitamins I like very much, listed on my profile page. Remember, do not take your vitamins or iron at the same time as your calcium citrate. Iron in the vitamins and/or the iron supplement will bond with the calcium, and you will not get their full benefit. For protein shakes, I liked the IsoPure powdered type from GNC or Rite Aid drug stores, also available on-line. I tried the IsoPure pre-made protein liquid drinks, which I found horrible to the taste. You may be able to get samples of the IsoPure powders from GNC stores, but you'll have to ask.

Congratulations and good luck on the 11th!! Don't buy too much of anything. Your taste is going to change after surgery, and it would stink if you got stuck with a million servings of something you couldn't stand. Get a good basic protein supplement and something to flavor water (like crystal light). I would also recommend some FAGE greek yogurt. Buy the 0%, which is fat free, add a little splenda and vanilla and you have sugar free fat free yogurt, which you can use to take your pills if your doctor says it's ok. Good Luck!!

Going on a liquid diet may deplete some of your nutrients. I know that Dr. Titus Duncan recommends these capsules. The website is www.newyouhealthclub.com

Most any of the protein shakes can be improved in flavor by the addition of some sugar free syrups, Walmart has sugar free chocolate, Publix has sugar free strawberry, and then there are the higher end sugar free syrups like you can buy for coffee but they make great protein shake flavors. Also if you like any kind of broths and can use unflavored protein powder in them it breaks up the monotony.

Protein capusules. No bloating or taste issues. You can get them at www.nashuanutrition.com They are called Capsul-Pro. Good luck!

The first two weeks is just liquids, so there is not much you can prepair. Just stock and try different broths, like Beef, Vegatable and CHiecken. Get Sugar Free Popsicles, and sugar free jello. I made and put jello into ZipLock Containers of about 8 oz each and I could eat about 1/2 of one at a time. I found that was very good to give me something that was solid in my mouth but liquid to my pouch. Best of success to you. You are doing the right thing for your health and life!

I would also sugest to listen to what your surgeon says.. But when it comes to being able to drink your protein shakes if they do not taste good to you, you can always mix a bit of sugar free jello in with them.. :) I take my bannana protein mix and add a touch of sugar free vanilla pudding with it.. Yummy.. and with my chocolate flavor I add a spoon of peanut butter with it.. tastes just like a reese cup to me.. Hope this helps.. God bless you Paula

I like the fruit flavored ISOPURE Zero Carb drinks -- you can get those at either GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe. At first you can mix them with water and graduate to just drinking it straight. The three flavors I like are Apple Melon, Grape Frost, and Alpine Punch. I had the apple flavored celestial seasonings teas and mix a little with that -- wasn't bad but I didn't make it a habit either. I purchase at least a mixed case once a month. The Vitamin Shoppe usually have some in ther refrigerated section -- you might want to go and purchase some individual bottles and try them out prior to surgery. I recommend them to everyone --don't know how many people have actually tried and like them. Stay away from the Orange flavored ones -- AWFUL. Those are the only 3 I've tried. Welcome to the LOSING SIDE. Holler back when you get home.

Any of these are what I use: 1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet). 2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken. 3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended. 4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or hand blender. They deliver 30g protein, less than 3g sugar, less than 200 calories, when made with water. Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat. I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of vit D3).
