Question:
Question about Medicare and Plastic Surgery

I live in southwest Missouri. I have Medicare and TriCare for Life. Does anyone know if Medicare will pay for the hospital charges for a tummy tuck? I don't have a huge amount of excess skin to deal with, but it is enough that it bothers me. I haven't checked with a surgeon but plan to soon. I have lost about 55 pounds and am within 10 - 15 pounds of goal.    — ShirleyF (posted on January 18, 2009)

I know a lady down the street that is checking into a tummy tuck, and has medicare, she says and this is for Michigan, you have to be at goal weight for 1 year, and they will pay for it.

I have Medicare, and I was doing some advance checking, and here's what they told me: You need prior authorization for reconstructive surgery, and if it's due to weight loss, you need to achieve and maintain your goal weight for one year. I live in Indiana, but I think Medicare's guidelines are the same in any state. It's Medicaid that has different guidelines from state to state for what it will and will not cover.
