Question:
WHERE CAN I GET A CARD FOR EATING OUT?

Someone had mentioned that there is a card for post-ops to present to a resturant when eating out so they can charge you accordingly. Thanks    — GAMARY (posted on March 23, 2005)

I know that many people get these cards, but you might want to do some sort of search on comments related to how accepted they are. As it has been said many times, it was our decision to have this surgery, and it is not required that restaurants accept them. Good luck!

I have a card, never used it. I never got charged more when I was obese. A better idea is to read the menu and find options that work for you. Try a cup of soup and an appetizer to share. Or split an entree with someone, or take part of it home with you. Lesser options - order from the senior or kid's menu. As another poster pointed out, restaurants are under NO OBLIGATION to accept your card and charge you less. And it does not matter how "authentic" your card is - who knows if it is signed by an actual doctor or by your next door neighbor? Check the library - there has been a lot posted on this in the past.

I don't know of a single restaurant that accepts the 'cards'. And most people know that you don't have to be a child to order off the child's menu, but why would you do that either...it's full of fat and carbs. You're better off just ordering what you like and bringing the rest home to enjoy for a few more meals. It's actually rather cost-effective and draws much less attention to your personal life. So even though restaurants don't accept the cards, they all have 'doggy bags'.

My doctor also provided me with one when I left the hospital. I've used it several times, but had an incident with Ryan's Rest. about 2 weeks ago. We have been in there 3 other times, and I was allowed to use it to recieve the kids price buffet instead of adult price. This last time we went to eat they said they didn't accept the cards, and I explained I had used it on 3 other occasions, and asked to speak to a manager. The manager said it had been routed through corporate, and they did not accept them. I was outraged for the simple fact, that there trying to make me pay a adult price for somethig I will not eat, and we all know buffet food can't be taken home. So I've emaild the corporate office, and it's been probably a good 3 weeks, and haven't heard anything.

MY DOCTORS OFFICE ALSO GAVE ME MINE. THOUGH I HAVE USED MINE A FEW TIMES AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS USING IT, LIKE SOME OF YOU HAVE. ONE OF THE PLACES THAT USED IT WITH NO PROBLEM WAS "DENNYS" RESTURANT. BUT YOU ARE RIGHT THEY ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO USE IT. I ALSO FIND THAT THE CHILDRENS MENU IS NOT THE GREATEST PLACE TO CHOSE FROM, MOST OF THE FOODS IN THERE ARE FRIED. SOUP IS ALWAYS A GREAT CHOICE. I AM 3 MONTHS POST OP AND I AM STILL ARFAID TO TRY SALADS. GOOD LUCK!!!

The bariatric treatment center in the hospital where I had my surgery gave me a card. However, I have not had to use it. When I go to buffet restaurants, I tell them that I had the gastric bypass and they usually have me go get the food I will eat and weigh it (less the weight of the plate). I usually pay under $3 for my meal, instead of $8 for the buffet. If I go to a regular, dine-in restaurant, I just order what I want, eat what I am supposed to, then box the rest and eat on it at my next meal. Then, give the rest to my daughter to eat. At Bob Evans, I ordered soup and cottage cheese. My bill was a little over $3. At Buckheads, I at the salmon dinner once, a cup of potato soup another time, etc. There is usually something you can order that will be reasonably priced that you can eat at most restaurants.
