Question:
I'm 6 weeks Post Op and nausea WILL NOT go away......HELP!!

I had Gastric bypass 6 weeks ago and my nausea will NOT go away. The dr has me on Zofran 8mg and it doesn't seem to help. My stomach 'pouch' is smaller then usual due to leaking; he ended up 'redoing' the procedure. There is only 1 operation, he didn't have to go back in, he did this revision during the original surgery. The nausea comes in waves, sometimes so bad it wakes me up. There isn't really a time that i'm not sick to my stomach. Does anyone have any helpful hints on what i can do to calm my stomach down or take the nausea away??? I would be forever grateful!!!!! Thank you in advance............    — SlNsWithin (posted on February 17, 2006)

I was also very sick for about 6 weeks. I threw up anything and everything that I put in my mouth and if I didn't eat I would dry heave. Then all the sudden it went away.

Chances are you are in ketosis-- meaning that your body is burning its fat stores. Unfortunately, the byproduct of that fat-burning process is the creation of ketones which are found in your saliva and which are very upsetting to your pouch. A few things that might help is to continue drinking (you will dilute the concentration of the ketones and help flush them out of your pouch). For me, I found that warm liquids (mostly coffee) helped. Also, to get rid of that ketosis taste in my mouth, I found that a super-concentrated Crystal Lite, mixed in with my Isopure Zero Carb also helped a great deal (plus it gave me more protein). The good news--- the stomach upset does eventually go away.

I use phenergan *and* Zofran to deal with nausea (though mine isn't from wls). I use phenergan pills or suppositories and the zofran orally disentegrating tablets. For me, I think it helps to alternate what I'm taking so that my body doesn't get used to one anti-nausea med. I have found that ginger or peppermint tea is really helpful and soothing to an upset stomach. I also eat a lot of pedialyte frozen popsicles... can't stand the liquid stuff but the freezer pops aren't too bad. The popsicles have electrolytes and a very small amount of sugar. I wouldn't advise you to break the law but I know a lot of people who have found relief by using medical marijuanna. Feel free to email me if you want to chat. Although I haven't had wls yet, I know how awful it is to deal with nausea that never goes away. Good luck, Sid
