Question:
I am out of control, am I hurting myself?

I am one-week and one day post op. Since day 5 I started on what is really week 3 of my surgeon's prescribed diet. Today I have been completely out of control. I have yet to throw up anything. I have ate all day & just finished a rolled up piece of ham with cheese (just like the old days). I feel like I have now stretched my pouch, that I am out of control, and that I will never lose weight now. Counseling yes may be an answer... but the question I'm really looking to have answered is: Have I caused any damage to myself? I haven't been in ANY pain. Have I stretched my pouch out? Will I still lose weight?    — juliehedges (posted on May 17, 2002)

Most important thing i think is you should do is get back on the eating plan you doctor gave you.I know it is tough for the first few weeks.Hang in there. Im not a Doctor but i dont think you streched out anything yet.

Julie-You probibly haven't done any damage to your pouch. If you need some help getting yourself back on track go back and read through your own personal page, from start to finish, remember the reason why you had this surgery! Your story has touched many people, read it, be inspired by it, and GET BACK ON TRACK!!! You've worked so hard to get this far, don't give up now!!! My thoughts are with you!! Get it together girl, we're pullin' for you! Tambi

Please call your Dr. and get some advice from them. On these pages we all give advice as to what we think is right. You Dr should know what is right for you. It is early in your journey and I hope that it is a successful one.-- Good Luck

Sorry, but as a long-term post-op, I really had to laugh at your question. People think they can blow open their stomach simply by eating too much. You would really have to eat a huge quantity to cause permanent damage to yourself. I mean it would have to HURT. It sound like what you're doing is mostly grazing ... which is a bad habit to get into, but probably won't cause permanent damage to your pouch. I think what you've got to do first is stop panicking and get out of the "diet mentality." You are not a failure just because you ate badly for a few days. You can get back with the program and succeed. Please, forgive yourself and realize you're human and you've made some bad choices, but you still deserve to be loved, and you will still succeed.

Get your surgeon's instructions out and start eating exactly what they want you to at this point of your recovery. You won't hurt your surgery by eating wrong on one day. You will stop the process of learning your new eating habits! It takes a few weeks to learn a new habit and these first few weeks are designed to teach eating meals, eating pureed foods teaches us particle size so we can later chew our foods to that same creamy consistancy. Buy yourself some sugar free fudgesicles for when you have mental hunger. You won't feel physical hunger for several months. So have good choices for you to grab when you just have to have a snack. At work I have a drawer full of fat free pudding cups and fruitsations cups! At home I have popsicles, small cans of fruit and fat free yogurts in the fridge. Good luck! These first few weeks are the hardest!
